Structure

Mission

The mission statement of the California Department of Education reads:[1]

Create strong, effective schools that provide a wholesome learning environment through incentives that cause a high standard of student accomplishment as measured by a valid, reliable accountability system. [2]

Superintendent

The current California Superintendent of Public Instruction is Tony Thurmond (nonpartisan). Thurmond assumed office in 2019.

State Board of Education

The State Board of Education is composed of 11 members, including a student representative who serves a one-year term. The other 10 members of the board serve staggered four-year terms. All members of the board are appointed by the Governor of California. The state Superintendent of Public Instruction serves as the board's executive officer and secretary. The purpose of the board is to set policies and regulations for the state's public school system. The State Board of Education also holds the authority to waive certain provisions of the California Education Code upon request from local education agencies.[3]
