Structure

Mission

The mission statement of the Kansas State Department of Education reads:[1]

We are an agency of Kansans serving Kansans by inspiring, coaching, and leading to create the conditions for each student's success.[2]

Superintendent

The current Kansas Commissioner of Education is Randy Watson (nonpartisan). Watson assumed office in 2015.

State Board of Education

The State Board of Education consists of 10 elected members, each representing a district comprised of four contiguous senatorial districts. Board members serve staggered four-year terms. Every other year, the board reorganizes to elect a chairman and vice-chairman. Responsibilities of the board include appointing a Commissioner of Education who serves as its executive director; providing a flexible and efficient delivery system to meet our students’ varied and changing needs; providing an effective educator in every classroom; ensuring effective, visionary leaders in every school; promoting and encouraging best practices for early childhood programs; and, developing active communication and partnerships with families, communities, business stakeholders, constituents and policy partners.[3]
