The 1st Congressional District of Kansas held an election for the U.S. House of Representatives on November 8, 2016.

Heading into the election, Ballotpedia rated this race as safely Republican. Roger Marshall (R) defeated Alan LaPolice (I) and Kerry Burt (L) in the general election on November 8, 2016. Marshall defeated incumbent Tim Huelskamp in the Republican primary on August 2, 2016. No Democrats filed to run.[4][5]

Outside groups took an interest in the primary battle between Huelskamp and Marshall. In a reversal of the usual narrative, Huelskamp, the incumbent, was supported by the more conservative, anti-establishment wing of the Republican Party, while the challenger, Marshall, received the backing of groups normally associated with establishment Republicans. Huelskamp was endorsed by Sen. Ted Cruz and the Club for Growth, while Marshall received endorsements from the Kansas Farm Bureau and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.[6]

Primary: A primary election is an election in which registered voters select a candidate that they believe should be a political party's candidate for elected office to run in the general election. They are also used to choose convention delegates and party leaders. Primaries are state-level and local-level elections that take place prior to a general election. Kansas utilizes a semi-closed primary process, in which previously unaffiliated voters can participate in the partisan primary of their choice (a voter who is already affiliated with a party can only vote in that party's primary).[7][8][9][10]

For information about which offices are nominated via primary election, see this article.

Incumbent: Heading into the election the incumbent was Tim Huelskamp (R), who was first elected in 2010.

Kansas' 1st Congressional District encompasses 69 counties in western and central Kansas (more than half of the state), making it one of the largest congressional districts in the nation. Located within the district are Salina, Dodge City, Emporia, Garden City, Hays and Hutchinson.[11]

Endorsements

Tim Huelskamp

  • Sen. Ted Cruz - "Tim Huelskamp is a principled conservative who has stood up to the Washington Cartel and fought for Kansans since the day he first arrived in our nation’s capital. On the issues that matter most to conservatives -- protecting innocent life, cutting out-of-control spending, and fighting to repeal Obamacare, just to name a few -- I have been able to count on Tim’s principled, conservative leadership. That’s why I’m proud to endorse Tim’s campaign for re-election and encourage the men and women of the Sunflower State to send him back to Congress to continue fighting for jobs, freedom, and security for Kansans and all Americans."[18]
