|As a single mother, raised by a single mother, I have a lived experience that is a perspective often not heard in our local government. As a union member, I have a deep understanding of, and perspective on, policies that would help every day working families. As a school board member for the Raytown Quality Schools Board of Education, I already have a tremendous amount of experience in dealing with complex and difficult issues of local government, as well as bringing diverse groups of people together in coalitions to solve problems facing all of us. As our Jackson County Legislator, I will put all of those perspectives and skills to use for all of us. I will continually strive to enhance and improve the quality of life for all residents and all neighborhoods.
- Property taxes should be a fair and equitable valuation. We must have a system that protects our seniors and low-income residents. Together, through our taxes, fund our schools, fire districts, our water and library districts. The importance of our property taxes impact the quality of schools which build quality growing communities. Together, our taxes directly impact the direct services we provide. Property taxes should enhance and improve the quality of life for residents. I propose working with the State to develop protections allowing for valuations no greater than 50-60%, as opposed to 90%. Additionally important is an accessible and user-friendly appeal process.
- I want to Identify ways to work in partnership throughout the county to improve infrastructure and development. Joint projects such as the Marlboro Bridge and along 135th Street are evidence of the success of such partnerships. Jackson County areas such as, Levasy and Sibley count on the county for improvements and should continue to do so. There are also areas that serve our county and our cities where we can look to add value, such as along Truman Road and 40 Highway. Investments are needed to enhance and improve the quality of life for all residents. In particular, those neighborhoods that are blighted, neglected and overlooked.
- Ensuring COMBAT dollars go where we need them most so that our neighborhoods and people are safe and thriving, supporting mental health initiatives, working to make property tax payments more accessible with a greater variety of options, making county legislature meetings more accessible to the public at-large, and working with our local communities on resource access and infrastructure projects to make sure our county is ready for our future.
While I am passionate about mental health services, safe neighborhoods and thriving schools, most importantly is being a voice for all residents. I would like our legislature and our legislative meetings to be more available to residents. I would recommend scheduling our meetings at a time that allows more residents to attend. Our public notice of meetings should be more visible to our residents and the meeting notes more available. I want to hear from residents. It is our community that is essential to our planning and our success.
