Elections for the office of Connecticut State Senate were held in Connecticut on November 6, 2012. A total of 36 seats were up for election.
The signature filing deadline for candidates wishing to run in these elections was June 12, 2012. The primary election was August 14, 2012.

Qualifications
Article III, Section 3 of the Connecticut Constitution states: The senate shall consist of not less than thirty and not more than fifty members, each of whom shall be an elector residing in the senatorial district from which he is elected. Each senatorial district shall be contiguous as to territory and shall elect no more than one senator.
Impact of redistricting

Between 2000 and 2010, Connecticut saw 4.9 percent population growth, which was half the national average.[3]
The Connecticut General Assembly is responsible for redistricting and may pass state legislative district maps with a two-thirds supermajority vote in each chamber. If the legislature does not pass a plan by the deadline, a 9-member bi-partisan committee is tasked with drafting new maps. The committee approved both state Senate and state House maps on November 30, 2011.[4]The maps were challenged by plaintiffs including the NAACP for potential violation of the “one person, one vote” requirement of the Fourteenth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, but the plaintiffs later filed to dismiss the case. [5]

- Endorsed candidates must be chosen at a party convention.
- No more than one candidate is allowed to be nominated for any office at the convention.
- That candidate then runs in the primary as a "party-endorsed candidate."
- Both endorsed and non-endorsed candidates must receive at least 15% of the vote at a convention or gather enough signatures to equal 2% of enrolled party members.
- If there is only one candidate, no primary is held.
The only districts with contested primaries in 2012 were District 19, District 23, and District 33.
