The Colorado Executive Director of Natural Resources is a state executive position in the Colorado state government. The executive director oversees the Colorado Department of Natural Resources, which manages, conserves, and oversees the state's land, mineral, water, and wildlife resources. The executive director is appointed by the governor with the consent of the Colorado State Senate.[1]

Current officeholder

The current executive director is Dan Gibbs. Gov. Jared Polis (D) appointed Gibbs on January 9, 2019. The Colorado State Senate approved Gibbs' nomination on February 5.[2]

(1) There is hereby created the department of natural resources, the head of which is the executive director of the department of natural resources.

Appointments

The executive director is appointed by the governor but must be confirmed by a majority vote of the state Senate. The governor may remove the executive director from office for "incompetency, neglect of duty, or abuse of the privileges of... office."

Per Section 34-21-102 of the Colorado Revised Statutes, the position of executive director is often held concurrently with the effectively defunct constitutional office of commissioner of mines (See Article XVI, Section 1 of the state constitution).[4]

(1) In accordance with the provisions of section 1 of article XVI of the Colorado constitution, it is the duty of the governor, with the consent of the senate, to appoint a person known to be competent to the office of commissioner, who may also be the executive director of the department of natural resources. The office of commissioner of mines shall be located in the office of the executive director of the department of natural resources. The governor has the power to remove said commissioner from office for incompetency, neglect of duty, or abuse of the privileges of such commissioner's office.

Term limits

The executive director is not subject to term limits.

According to the official website, the executive director is responsible for "[leading] the development and execution of the Department’s initiatives for the balanced management of the state’s natural resources. [The executive director] works on an array of issues pertaining to all of Colorado’s natural resources, including water, wildlife, state lands, oil and gas and mining."[5]
