The Idaho Director of Lands is a state executive position in the Idaho state government. The director heads the Idaho Department of Lands, the agency that manages the state's land endowment trusts. The trusts are composed of 3.6 million acres of state land, the revenues from which largely fund Idaho's public school system. The director is appointed by and serves at the pleasure of the Idaho Board of Land Commissioners, a seven-member body comprised of other Idaho state executives.[1]

Appointments
The director of lands is appointed by and serves at the pleasure of the Idaho Board of Land Commissioners, a five-person body made up of other state executives. The board includes the governor, secretary of state, attorney general, controller and the superintendent of public instruction.[5]

The duties of the director are described in Section 58 Chapter 1 of the Idaho Statutes. The director "shall have general supervision of all field work, and with such assistants as he, with the approval of the board may appoint, select, locate and appraise all lands which are now, or may be hereafter, granted to this state by the United States for any purpose whatever, and who shall perform the other duties as shall be required of him by the board, or as shall be prescribed by their rules."[6]
