Candidate Connection

Ben Hornberger participated in Ballotpedia's candidate survey on April 10, 2018. The survey questions appear in bold, and Ben Hornberger's responses follow below.[1]

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

1) I would like to restructure the tax brackets from seven to four. This would put more money back into the pockets of the working class and small business owners.

2) Secure funding for volunteer firefighters and emergency services.
3) I would like to set up a grant of $5,000 per county that I represent out of my own salary to help an entrepreneur to start a small business within the district.[2][3]

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about? Why?

I am personally passionate about supporting veterans and helping homeless vets get the help they need and deserve.Cite error: Invalid <ref> tag; invalid names, e.g. too many[3]

Ballotpedia also asked the candidate a series of optional questions. Ben Hornberger answered the following:

Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow, and why?

I look up to people like Rand Paul. He sticks to his guns regardless of what people say.[3]
What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?
Boldness, courage (moral, physical, and mental), integrity, love of country, someone who puts service above benefit and country above political party.[3]
What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?
I am not beholden to anybody. I believe that I have the courage to sand up for what is right.[3]
What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?
To represent what the majority of constituents want within the district.[3]
What legacy would you like to leave?
I would like to leave a legacy that shows that an elected official can truly be honest.[3]
What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at the time?
9/11 happened when I was just 7 years old.[3]
What was your very first job? How long did you have it?
I was a part time cashier at 16 years old and I held the job until I graduated.[3]
What is your favorite holiday? Why?
Fourth of July. It reminds me of why I love my country so much.[3]
Do you believe that it’s beneficial for representatives to have previous experience in government or politics?
It may be beneficial but it is not required. Anybody could be good at the job. We as a society need to give outside people a chance to prove themselves.[3]
If you are not a current representative, are there certain committees that you would want to be a part of?
I would hope to be able to join a caucus or committee that strictly deals with veterans issues.[3]
Do you believe that two years is the right term length for representatives?
Yes[3]
What are your thoughts on term limits?
I agree with term limits. I have agreed to term limit myself to no more than four terms (eight years) in office.[3]
What process do you favor for redistricting?
I favor the legislative bodies following the constitution.[3]
If you are not currently a member of your party’s leadership in the U.S. House of Representatives, would you be interested in joining the leadership? If so, in what role?
I would like to be the Speaker of The House so that I could push other reps to do their jobs.[3]
Is there a particular representative, past or present, whom you want to model yourself after?
Rand Paul or Ron Paul[3]

Ballotpedia survey responses

Hornberger stated the following about his political philosophy in a biographical submission to Ballotpedia:[4]

I chose to run for office because I truly care for my district and the people in it. I am tired of people getting screwed over all the time by career politicians who don't give a damn.[3]
