A Child's Prayer

For Morn, my dome of blue,
For Meadows, green and gay,
And Birds who love the twilight of the leaves,
Let Jesus keep me joyful when I pray.

For the big Bees that hum
And hide in bells of flowers;
For the winding roads that come
To Evening’s holy door,
May Jesus bring me grateful to his arms,

Analysis (ai): The poem conveys a child's innocent plea for protection and guidance, seeking solace in nature and divine care. It echoes themes of childhood faith and vulnerability, common in war poetry.

In contrast to Sassoon's later works, which often explored the horrors of war, this poem lacks the overt anti-war sentiment. Instead, it depicts a child's simple request for safety and joy amidst uncertain times.

The language is straightforward and unadorned, reflecting the child's perspective. The use of personification, with birds loving the twilight, adds a touch of wonder and innocence. The repetition of "For" emphasizes the child's litany of prayers.

This poem stands as a poignant reminder of the fragility of childhood during wartime, while also capturing the universal longing for protection and reassurance. Its simplicity and brevity convey a timeless message of hope and innocence amidst adversity. (hide)
