Time to Celebrate

Today is my Birthday, and I picked myself a pretty black and white virtual cake from WildOrchidBaking to match our new furniture piece :)
The last finishing touches were done yesterday evening, even though it is a small piece it took many many days, but the results make me giggle.

But I am jumping to the results, lets start at the beginning...

It all started with these two abandoned ugly ducks. Clearly water damaged, and in general sad state.
Also the structure was wonky. We decided to make of the pretty front feet an ottoman, the back feet have no carvings. So two chairs would become one ottoman.

Pulling them apart turned out to be a challenge. The stuff that came out of the chairs was pretty disgusting, fabric pieces, straw, cotton etc and all in a far from fresh state.

We were left with this. The original idea was to make it square, by using two piece of the original wood connected together (a bit hard to explain). But then we would cut a bit of the carved wood, the parts that are sticking above would be all sawed off. Eventually we thought to just keep the wood as it is, and making the seat rectangular and turning the weird sticking out pieces into arm rests.

I think you are now starting to see where we are going at, still butt-ugly but a cool shape, right :)?
We used the original corners to make it stable, this little chair has so much extra stuff for stability, you could dance on it.

The pieces of wood used for the arm rests are upcycled from an old shelf,

After the added webbing it is starting to look like something.

And after many hours of scraping and sanding the ugly dark varnish you can finally appreciate the carvings, which are much prettier and more dimensional than we first thought.

Then I painted it, which I had shown last week. The painting and varnishing took me a full 3 days.

The color choice of the paint work was because of this beautiful vintage embroidery. It is completely embroidered and has gorgeous colors and texture.

Doesn't make these colors you super cheerful?

For the additional unexpected finishing touch a black and white double piping, which is really frustrating to sew and staple but gives a beautiful finishing.

And here it is (she said proudly), it is fun, colorful, cheerful and 90% made of upcycled/ recycled/ vintage materials, yaaay!

Stripes, flowers, lots of colors what is not to love about this?

I think this would be great as a vanity chair in the bedroom, or in the hallway or in the living room. Could even be used as piano chair, but most of all this is a statement piece and should be seen :)

Can't wait to paint the ugliness out of another chair :)

The chair is available at StarHomeStudio among others one of a kind furniture pieces.

Istanbul - Day 3

Here is a funny story, since the protests for the park, other small protests happened too, ways for people to make a statement. One of those is painting stairs in the city in rainbow colors. Istanbul is build on 7 hills, therefor there are many steep streets but also often stairs. Usually these stairs are grey. About one week ago a man desided to paint one of these stairs in a cheerful colorful rainbow, to bring some color to the street but also as an act of freedom and hope, and as a symbol of unity of different kind of people believing in the same thing (in this case a better government for Turkey). The same night the municipality of Istanbul painted these stairs back to grey. Of course this made people mad :) And as people got mad the next day the municipality painted the same stairs back in a rainbow. This act inspired many people and now not only in Istanbul but also in many other cities you can find these cheerful colorful rainbow stairs, here is one of them :)

Today I went for supply shopping, I was too tired and my hand were often too full to take pictures, hopefully I'll remember tomorrow to take some pictures of Eminönü, the beads heaven.
After that I met with several Etsy sellers, we had coffee and home made lemonade at a cute café and chatted about Etsy, handmade and politics.

From left to right Funda from FundaDemircan,  Serpil from SerpilGuneysu, Nesrin from Nikacollection, Pınar from Toosis, Aslı from Afra, Enhar from LoveJoyCreate, Sema from BeyazDukkan and me.

It was lovely to meet you ladies :)

After that Serpil took me to an old harbour which now is only used as a bistro café, a wonderful place, incase you come to Istanbul it is the old 'Moda İskelesi'.

A nice way to end another exhausting day :)

Our Creative Space...

As the preparations of the sea urchins take alot of time, we always do a larger bunch at once. These are the harvest of the entire winter, and are now in their last stadium which is covering them with epoxy. Before this they have been in 5 different preparations to be able to use them in our jewelry and home decor.

These shells are a very dull grey when we find them, but as soon as they are varnished their pearly details and amazing stripes and patterns pop up.

In the mean time a rainbow bag is in the make, for the happy cheerful who are not afraid to use some color in daily life :)

Our Creative Space...

I've been playing with vintage scraps again, it really makes me happy.

Look at the stack of bright pancakes!

All it takes is perseverance.

And slowly a bag begins to form.

I would love to have the space to teach workshops. I so miss the contact with other crafters in real life.

Our Creative Space...

A very colorful creative space this week, while we are creating rainbows for this week's challenge of the EuropeanStreetTeam with the theme Rainbow! It will become a very happy tote once it is finished.

And more color and sunshine, while we are busy with our new jewelry line Green at Heart, you can see the first in our shop. They all will be a combination of vintage embroidery, felt and metal, with a floral theme.

And our biggest hobby, creating a huge mess :)...
