Some Finished Projects

 

I wanted to show off some special pieces that I finished lately. 

This huge headboard was a work in progress for ages, mainly because of the tedious job of removing the old dark brown paint and varnish. 

It is always the tasks you don't see that are the most work. Once the old paint was gone, the new paint work was fun and easy in comparison.

An old tapestry was used in the center, it has a nice thick foam so it is soft to sit against.

It is very large, for a king size bed, and makes an impressive statement. I hope to see where it ends up once sold. Available at StarHomeStudio.

This project was kind of spur of the moment, and I love it. Discovered two old Gesso frames in our storage, it had a lot of damage so couldn't be used as it was.

So I gave it a complete makeover. After reinforcing and fixing the frame itself, I filled up the missing Gesso with dimensional roses.

I then painted it all in purple, blue, magenta and orange.

I posted a Reel on Instagram where you can see better the before.

I'm loving the result and am going to tackle the second frame this week :)

Hidden Beauty

It has been a while since we made our last big furniture piece.

This one was actually even worse with a horrible purple upholstery but I forgot to take a picture of it, I guess I wanted to get rid of that monstrous fabric asap.

After sanding, filling and painting its feet and making a new filling with fresh foam it already started to look better.

As we used a gorgeous vintage fabric we needed to be very careful before starting cutting the fabric, no room for error when your material is precious vintage handwoven fabric with hand embroidered flowers!

I got all giddy while making this, you can not not smile when you look at this chair :)

After all staple work was done it was time for the small finishing touches like blind stitching by hand for a smooth finishing. I prefer to do those outside for better light but miraculously we have been having rain these past few days (yaaay) so I did them in a funny way. Advantage when you work from home no need to get out of your comfy PJ's :)

Just some pretty trim for the front feet to cover the staples.

And she is ready!

My entire body aches, upholstery is hard work!

I love all the embroidered details!

Moroccan Tiles

Yesterday we finished this beautiful patchwork bag. We used all kind of vintage and pre-loved fabrics and added some doilies which we had dyed a while back.
The result reminds me of the beautiful Moroccan tiles which I love.

Don't you just love the combination of various patterns?

I found all these tile images on Pinterest, among many others.

I love how little pieces of fabric can turn in something beautiful and useful.

Our Creative Space...

Several projects at once are in process. I'm working on a large kilim doctor bag, sewing tough leather and kilim in shape is a challenge but I love these bags.

Another chair is in progress, this one has some pretty cool arms, very mid century.
The chair is resting on a wooden spool...

...which is yet another project as it is going to become an ottoman.
The sides will be old kilim. And the top will be this embroidery below.

This punch needle embroidery was originally done on green velvet but it had bald spots, stains and discolorations, so we cut out the embroidery with a little fabric around it, placed it on a new strong upholstery fabric and mum painstakingly sewed it all by hand on the fabric. A great way to safe a damaged embroidery, plus it got bigger as we placed the branches with some more space to fit the ottoman better.
These three pieces should be done pretty soon, the heat is making it all a little hard to work!

From Wood to Furniture

I showed some pretty embroideries last time as a tiny sneak peak on the furniture piece that we were working on. Now it is time to show it all :)

Chairs are basically pieces of wood put together, without upholstery they are pretty ugly, the more they ar re-upholstered the more history you'll see. This one had still its original upholstery which was some weird green stuff that was falling apart, I unfortunately thought I had taken a picture for the before but found out too late that I had not...

After removing ugly brown paint and painting it black it needed new webbing and new foam before starting to make it pretty.

Funny enough it became green again, but a very different green than the original upholstery.

These geometric shapes are not fabric as you might rightfully think! It is done like tapestry knot by knot, a crazy amount of work and the fabric is in fact white which you do not see at all do to the embroidery work, I don't think you can have anyone have something like this made these days.

The staples at the front I covered with fabric covered wood cut to shape.

I usually sew the back fabrics sides by hand, so that you do not see anything, this times I used nails for a different finishing and as a bonus it went much quicker than sewing by hand.

I just love how colorful and vibrant it turned out and I used the same nails at the front to cover the staples near the wooden feet.

Beside the green fabric and foam everything used had a previous life, which I always find satisfying.

The side flowers are also vintage embroidery, because a chair should be pretty from every side :)
