TV cameras for former race leader Levi Leipheimer, though he lost nearly a minute and a half to Landis.
Le Tour de California goes thru San Diego County.
This is in Balboa Park, 15 mn after the race started.
What fast looks like standing still.
Floyd Landis won Stage 3 of the Tour of California this afternoon by blowing away the field in a time trial. On this particular stretch of road he faced a heavy headwind that miraculously cleared for the riders who followed him.
Two things to note; Landis spent time in a wind tunnel in the off-season, perfecting his position. Plus, when you're going really fast, you tend to inch forward on the saddle to get more power, as Landis has here.
Youch.
Mari Holden was a bike racer with national titles, a World Championship and an Olympic medal, and is now a television announcer and coach. She's lovely and apparently decided to dispense with the subtle approach in Solvang...

The look. Not the look, but a look nonetheless from race leader Levi Leipheimer to see who he was dragging up Sierra Road. Levi and the rider in pink, Bernhard Kohl (plus the guy in green, Floyd Landis) became the select three from this bunch, cresting the climb together.
There are disadvantages being so close to the begining of the race .... they go by you so fast you have to be quick on the shutter button.
Photo by Josh. After the race we were walking back to our car and I just couldn't resist taking this one. Amazing how cycling is free to watch and you can mingle with the riders and their equipment. It's like going into the locker room after a baseball game to just hang out and talk about baseball.

"Turn your shower on as cold as it is and stand there for, you know, four hours. That's what it's like." ..."we're sitting out there shivering, freezing, cold rain and you see thousands of die-hard fans out there cheering us on. They're suffering in the weather just like we are. So it definitely motivates us."- Levi Leipheimer

The first thing you see when the Amgen comes to town are the bikes. They come into town, strapped to the top of brightly colored cars, by the hundreds. Then, they're taken down from the cars and lined up in perfect little rows. It's an amazing photographic opportunity.

More later; I've (temporarily) returned to my roots...

Ashley looks right into your eyes and strokes your arm when she talks with you. Does she have any idea what affect that has on men?

Taken from ground level along Agoura Road during the first of four 20.4 mile/32.8km laps (circuits) of Stage 8 of the 2010 Amgen Tour of California bicycle race. I was shooting continuously with the Nikkor 70-300 lens as the pack sped past my location. Each circuit took approximately 45 minutes so a had an opportunity to shoot from four different locations all within a couple of blocks of each other.

This guy popped out of the crowd near the top of the Oval and was cranking hard all the way to the finish (where he was just pipped at the line by Mike Sinyard, on a larger trike with a built-in water purification system). Check out the aero bars and disk wheels, plus the custom helmet.
