AMGEN 2015 Tour of California
Stage 8 - Los Angeles to Pasadena Rose Bowl

Sonora is a tiny little town. They were more than up to the task of hosting a race start, but everything was jammed in as tight as could be. From a spectator point of view, this was AWESOME. The kids from the Bontrager-Liverstrong U23 took over this storefront to get ready for the race; putting on sunscreen and their race uniforms, stuffing their jersey pockets with energy bars and gels, etc. They also had to share the sidewalk with all the fans walking by.
Matthew Crane headed down University Ave for his time trial in the prologue of the Tour of California. For the local folks - this is from Cowper all the way down to Alma, with the rail tracks in the distance. About half a mile.
ÂLarger Crane. From here, sprinting south-west towards Stanford.
And he rides again! Lance Armstrong at the 2009 Amgen Tour of California.

Peter was coming up on the podium 4 times every day for 4 straight days (stage winner, race leader, sprint jersey holder, + best young rider). He was getting a lot of kisses. For whatever reason, the podium girls, er, Michelob Ambassadors, switched out their lipstick in Clovis for a hi-viz variety and from this day forward you could easily tell who won the stage.

The brunette is Jenn. The Amgen Tour of California Podium Girls are dressed up as Fly V flight attendants. Jenn's name tag says "Sally." Ashley's name tag says "Heidi."
ÂI think Jenn is a podium girl for 2011 as well. For 2011 Amgen Tour of California photos, please view my 2011 set. As of this writing I have something like 200 unprocessed photos that are still awaiting uploads (including a few of the 2011 podium girls) so please be patient -- I'll them them up as fast as I can!

ÂI decided to go out and photograph the tour at a couple of locations. While there were a few spectators along the route it didn't seem to have the glamour or popularity of the 'Lance Armstrong Days". It's a shame really.

Every rider on Garmin-Cervelo seemed to have a different model of bike. Out of the 4 bikes pictured, it looks like 3 different frame styles (S3, R5CA and R3SL). Ryder has the super light crazy expensive ($US9000+ for frameset alone) R5CA, which came out of the Cervelo Project California. All of the team bikes are carbon fiber, but one way Cervelo saves weight on the R5CA is to leave the frame bare carbon, no paint, just the black Cervelo stickers. You can also see the R5CA uses smaller diameter tubing, and from what I've read, the tubing itself is thinner than other Cervelo tubes.
ÂAll of the Garmin-Cervelo bikes have one thing in common-- Mavic Cosmic deep dish carbon fiber rims.

Peter Sagan on the podium, Amgen Tour of California, stage 8. Normally Peter was wearing Sidi podium shoes when he came on stage, but today he still had his race shoes on.
ÂSeriously with a mustache like that, I thought it was Ben Stiller.
ÂIt's actually Steven Cozza

ÂJust like always, they came in a flash and were gone in an instant.
Bikes were stacked up all over while the riders signed in on stage. This is the Bianchi Sempre model, ridden by Jhon Atapuma (91) and Michael Rodriguez Galindo (96). Personally I like an all-over Bianchi Celeste, but the team colors aren't bad, I like the one red spoke. The Sempre is built using a carbon fiber monocoque.

ÂLeft to right: 2nd place Heinrich Haussler, winner Peter Sagan, 3rd Michael Matthews. All 3 riders were given cowboy hats when they were presented on stage. Peter kept his cowboy hat on throughout the entire ceremony, Michael Matthews had switched back to his team hat, and Heinrich NEVER put his cowboy hat on.

I was checking out the thighs and Lance Armstrong has the biggest thighs of all the racers....seriously!
Here, the Amgen Tour of California is just starting its way down the peak of Patterson Pass and going
fa-a-a-a-ast!!! At this point I wasn't sure whether to stay and shoot or get up and run!

Another time trial rider, this one frozen at 1/4000 of a second as he starts the first downhill portion of the 18.4 mile track.
