My 7yo EE hen once again has a swollen eye, this time with rattle sounding chest. (Original post https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/swollen-eyes-and-face.1612689/) only the left eye is swollen this time, and initially did not have any pus. We soaked the lid in saline to open it and she seemed fine. She sounded rattly in her chest and we gave her vitamins and probiotics. That cleared up in a week, but a few days later her eye was again swollen with quite a bit of pus. We removed the pus daily, and her chest seemed clear, but then started to rattle again. Since it had been 2 weeks and she wasn’t getting better, I took her to the vet ($$$) where she got Ab injection, and doxycycline + terramycin. We’ve been doing this for 5 days (plus putting a little menthol underneath her wings and ears) but her eye is still not better, though the rattle is gone. She is eating, but feels very thin. Her keel feels prominent. At the vet she was about 3 lb, light for a full grown EE. I cannot see her eye even when we clean it out. She is still active with the flock, runs around and even challenges the young upstart who is trying to take her place. I’ve ordered tylosin as tomorrow is the last day of doxy, but not sure I can go for more Ab without a break. Should I wait a few days, give probiotics and vitamins, then to tylosin? I’ll keep cleaning her eye and putting in terramycin. It’s hard to get in her eye, but I think we are getting most of it in there. Any other thoughts?

It’s much better today, less swelling and infection. Maybe the meds are working? I cleaned and flushed her eye, you can hardly see it, pretty sunken. Her neck feathers are all stiff from drainage I think… she’ll need a bath once she gets stronger

I didn’t take pictures, but tonight there was quite a lot of infection, even small pieces of semi-solid pus. Frustrating how long this is lasting, and the vet meds didn’t seem to do much. My tylosin should be here soon so I’ll start her on that. Continuing her terramycin and eye flushing, plus menthol. She seems feistier, doesn’t want me near her eye so it takes a while to get her cleaned up, I’m hoping it doesn’t overly stress her. I think this all started after a molt… she stopped laying and hasn’t started again, imagine she won’t lay again until spring. She’ll be 8 then, getting up there in years.

Mornings seem better than evenings. This morning she has infection, but not much and fairly watery. Tonight large viscous globs were coming out. Flushing and adding ointment, it looked fairly good after that, but it’s definitely not getting better. My tylosin order seems to be hung up, now arriving Saturday

I would try to get all of the pus out of the eye with flushing with saline or something like Bausch and Lomb Eye Relief and QTips or tissues. Use either Terramycin eye ointment from your feed store or plain Neosporin ointment into the eye 2-3 times a day. Your vet might help you get Tylosin or other antibiotics sooner.

I’ve been flushing and getting it all clear 2x daily, and using the terramycin each time. I’ll see if the vet can just get some tylosin for her without the visit (too expensive to repeat the full process… and they really don’t know much about birds). I’ve also been using Vicks vaporub by her ears and under her wings at night, hoping anything will help. Wondering if I should give her scrambled eggs with nutridrench as a supplement?

Morning and evening she had thick viscous infection. Flushed each time, added terramycin. Giving her and the flock probiotics and vitamins. Hoping she can kick this
