Sorry, not sure if this is best here or disease section- apologies mods feel free to put me on the naughty step :)

We have a rumpless araucana, only state that bit as I know there’s different breed standards.
She is coming up a year old, they are all being fed a mix of layers and growers (to increase protein in winter). They have some cabbage/ greens as peck “toys” and a bit of corn/ sunflower seeds in the afternoon. They free range most of the day over about an acre.
No current evidence...

First of all let me tell you how we view our flock as that will help you to understand why we treat them like we do.

My Turkey chick (nearly 2 months old) has diarrhea and is looking very dopey (not wanting to move around with the flock), as well as keeping its head very close to its body. It has no spots/sores on it, and is not stargazing. I have separated it from the rest of my turkeys and am keeping it in a box with wood shavings and a hot water bottle and water/food etc. I am giving it diatomaceous earth, but I don't know what else to give it.

How can I get her to stop eating the eggs?
All the hens have vitamins including calcium in their water. Should I be giving additional calcium?
Thank you.

I was looking for Cornish Chickens earlier this year. I had a terrible time trying to find them through breeders all across the USA. There are none. At least, there are none that are publicly mentioned on any website that lists breeders of chicken breeds. The ones I found were no longer breeding/selling them. I only found two hatcheries that sell any variety of Cornish, and both of them had nearly non-existent availability for chicks. I only saw Dark and White Laced Red Cornish.

Why?

"0 predator awareness"
And oh, so much more.

Well my friends - I thought so too, until I actually got silkies for myself. These are some of the most wonderful birds out there.

Winterizing run! Fri, 22 Nov 2024 04:10:08 +0000 https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/winterizing-run.1646218/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss 1646218 [email protected] (AlayC) <![CDATA[Coop & Run - Design, Construction, & Maintenance]]> AlayC <![CDATA[
Hi!

We live where we get pretty bad winters and it’s our first year of having chickens and have a question on how to wrap the run for cold temperatures, snow and wind.

We’ve started wrapping the run with plastic sheets to help keep it warm and away from the elements, and u have concerns about ventilation. The run has three sides and a door, how many sides should be covered by plastic?

Thanks!

Housing a feral cat inside the chicken run for rodent control? My land is a certified wildlife habitat and I have many birds, rabbits, fox, deer and more species that live here, so just having "barn cats" on the property is too much of a danger to my wildlife population.
I've kept chickens for 16 years, in a predator-proof run and coop (never been breached by anything other than rodents and snakes). I currently have 26 birds, both full-size and bantams. I keep my bulk feed in sealed containers in a separate storage cabinet and I use peppermint...

I have one bantam cochin with tapeworm fragments in poop. In Canada, all I have found for treatment is Eqvalan Gold which has 120 MG ivermectin and 600mg praziquantel. How much should I give my Bantam who has lost weight and should I treat all my girls even if there are no signs of infection?

Hello! Since daylight saving time occurred, I have had 1-4 ladies that end up camping out in the secure run after their automatic door closes to the coop. I have a cam in the run, so I just go down, open the door and they make all kinds of angry hen noises as I pick them up and place them on the board going to the door.

I am trying to figure out what is going on. I have artificial light an hour before sunrise and an hour after sunset. Could it be that I need to upgrade my automatic...

Hi, I have a 7mo old who has rickets. Her legs are bent and splayed. I didn't know she had it until she started showing signs at about 3 months old. She isn't totally immobile, but can only stand on the joint where her thigh meets her legs and can hop and scoot around. I've been giving extra calcium, sunshine and poultry cell almost exclusively since she has been indoors for about 4 months now. I'm not really finding anything online about an older chicken with rickets, only chicks. My...

Hello, I have a hen who is not doing too hot. To make sure that I get all the info down that I can, I will answer all the questions that are at the top of the emergency page.
1) Breed, Age, Weight: Frost White Legbar, less than a year, she seems to be a relatively normal weight.

2) Behavior: Bad balance, drooping head, lethargy, clear and liquidy poop, lack of appetite.

3) How long has the bird been exhibiting symptoms? The hen has been acting off for around...

I had 2 speckled Sussex 26 months, 2 easter eggers 5 years old, three 26 month barred rocks. Neighbors dog has repeatedly dug under my fence past year and a half to run on my property and I have warned him to control them. I warned him of my livestock. His dogs came on my property and I was alerted by security cam. I texted him to get them and he couldn't find them he said. Then I got horrible alerts from the coop security cam of his Husky killing my hens in their coop. The dog ripped...

I’ve had my female turkey for about 5 years and about two weeks ago she started moving slowly and had ruffled feathers. I had thought it was her molt causing these symptoms but when she didn’t improve I separated her. She has a crackling when she breathes, she won’t eat much, and has ruffled feathers. She’s been weak when she stands and it seems like the dewormer and the antibiotics aren’t helping her eat more or the cough. I was wondering if anyone knows what she could have, if there’s any...
