Hi - So I finally ended the hatch, it's been over 32 days. I had 5 live hatches out of 15 eggs. Two externally pipped and made a nickel / cm and half or so size hole in the egg, were cheeping, then died for no apparent reason. Never opened the incubator and there were no signs of shrink wrapping. I had four others that were developed but never pipped. The remaining four eggs were not fertilized. I also had a second thermometer inside that displayed the temperature and humidity and checked it frequently.
I'm not sure what went wrong here. I've been hatching quail for a while and this is my first time hatching ducks but I've always gotten 55% hatch rate or better on shipped quail eggs. These were also shipped eggs but I can't explain why in fact 6/15 looked fully developed with two externally pipping but with none of the six leading to live hatches. The five live hatches are all doing great in a brooder, that's one good thing at least.

Sorry you didn't get as many as maybe could have. Sometimes there isn't a reason. Was humidity around 70% or so the last few days prior to hatch date? Some recommend misting the eggs towards the end too. If humidity and temp were right on, then there's not much anyone can do except try again.

Many folks say hatching ducks is tougher than other birds.

Congrats on the five you have. They must be fun! Be sure to try again!

The next time, if you get into a situation where you feel like it's repeating the same thing, you may want to consider assisting, even if just making them a breathing hole. This article shows how.

Thanks. The two that pipped then died seemed to be fine then were just dead. Like it wasn't an excessive amount of time or anything between stages of hatching. The second one, in particular, it had broken through the shell and was peeping when I woke up then it just became silent and wasn't moving. I opened up the egg as the first one died in the egg and it had just died. The others that were developed but never pipped seem to have died in the eggs at some point. I candled a couple of times and there was no movement or anything.

Humidity was good, it was 70% or a bit higher during the hatch.

Thanks for your advice. I plan to buy a batch of eggs from another seller and try again. I am glad I got five healthy ducks though. At least from this one experience, quail definitely seem easier than ducks.
