Smash! is an original song first featured in Previews, the fourteenth episode of the first season of Smash. Being an original song, it was written by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman. The version released as a single features Megan Hilty (Ivy Lynn) and Katharine McPhee (Karen Cartwright) on lead vocals.
In the context of Bombshell, the number flashes forward to the adult Norma Jeane, who is now an actress often confronted with the casting couch. We see a large number of aspiring actresses sneak into film producer Darryl F. Zanuck's office and bribe him with sexual favors to be cast in his films. These young women are led by Norma Jeane, and Zanuck seems to enjoy their advances. It was written by Tom Levitt and Julia Houston and was first performed at the Boston previews with Ivy Lynn as Aspiring Actress #1 and Karen Cartwright as Aspiring Actress #2. Marc Kudisch portrayed Darryl F. Zanuck and other aspiring actresses include Jessica and Sue.
Lyrics[]
Aspiring Actress #1:
You ask me, how far will I go
You ask me what I wouldn't do
For the sight of my name
As if it fills every frame
Yes, I want to be more than a flash
Aspiring Actress #2:
I ask you, what lies should I tell
I tell you I'm willing to learn
So enroll me in school
In your kidney-shaped pool
In a two-piece I make quite a splash
'Cause I wanna be a smash
All Aspiring Actresses:
Yes, I wanna be a hit and run
'Til I've won every heart
Aspiring Actress #2:
Be a queen to each king or mechanic
All Aspiring Actresses:
Plus you, Mr. Zanuck
But first, mister
You have to give me the part
I know all the tricks of the trade
I've even invented a few
Aspiring Actress #1:
Now your interest in mounting
Aspiring Actress #2:
And soon we'll be counting
The lights
Aspiring Actress #1:
And the nights
All Aspiring Actresses:
And the cash
'Cause I'm gonna be a smash!
Yes, I'm gonna be a smash!
Won't you help be a
Smash!
