History
Limbo was a place outside of time historically ruled by Immortus. Limbo was a sort of "pocket universe", whose physical and temporal scope were extremely limited compared to the universe that ordinary human beings inhabited. To those within Limbo, it appeared roughly analogous to a planet, with a solid surface at one earth gravity and a sky devoid of stars.[1]
Temporal Limbo was a timeless realm used for time travel. It was a dimension that was unique in that it existed outside the time-stream and thus possessed no time. Universe in Temporal Limbo was comprised of a single, ever-changing moment in which everything that ever was, is, and could be coexisted. Human beings within Temporal Limbo might have imagined that time passed there, since they were conditioned to think in such a way, but they could not age or die there.[2] Immortus had almost complete control over Limbo, even able to wield Mjolnir there.[3]
It was ruled by Immortus from his castle Tenebrae, which was the primary point of interest there. Its primary occupants were the giant Tempus, the Space Phantoms, and Immortus. Temporal Limbo was primarily been visited by the Avengers and their allies, such as Thor. Thor expended all of Mjolnir's time travel abilities to save the planet Phantus, home of the Space Phantoms, from Limbo.[3] Phantus was a hoax, perpetrated to trick Thor into giving up Mjolnir's temporal abilities.[4]
Instead of killing his foes, Rom banished Dire Wraiths to Limbo.[5]
Kang's city-base of Chronopolis was depicted as existing outside of time, and therefore could have been in temporal Limbo.[6]
Limbo was, at one "time", taken over by Apocalypse of Earth-13393, a possible future of Earth-92131 in the year 3999 AD. After realizing that his conquest of Earth would forever be stymied by his enemies, he stole Cable's computer and used its time travel function to travel to Limbo to secure victory once and for all. He found himself in Immortus' citadel and spent centuries understanding its secrets. He then recruited various allies to help kidnap telepaths from the modern era of Earth-92131 and used their psychic powers to destroy the current universe and create a new one where he reigned supreme. Immortus himself remained undetected by Apocalypse and disguised himself as a seemingly insane man named Bender who claimed to be the janitor in what he referred to as the "Axis of Time".
He soon found the future X-Man Bishop from the year 2055 AD of Earth-31393. Bishop was caught in the temporal disturbance caused by Apocalypse's time traveling and ended up in Limbo himself. As Bender, Immortus guided Bishop through his realm and showed him glimpses of events that were part of Apocalypse's schemes as they occurred in the present on Earth-92131. Immortus provided Bishop with cryptic information, which ultimately led to the X-Men and their allies defeating Apocalypse and freeing the captured telepaths. The fortress of Immortus was seemingly destroyed in the process, but after the heroes returned to their native reality, Immortus ditched his Bender disguise and began the rebuilding of his citadel.[7]
Hoping to return Iron Man, Scarlet Witch, and Falcon to their adult selves, Thor, Ms. Marvel, and H.E.R.B.I.E. stole Doctor Doom's time machine and used it to enter Limbo from Earth-91119. They fought several Space Phantoms, but stopped once Thor realized that they were the invaders. The Space Phantoms agreed to take the heroes to the Time Tower, where they found Doom, along with Abomination and M.O.D.O.K. having taken control of the Tower and its power. Thor, Ms. Marvel, H.E.R.B.I.E., and a Phantom attempted to fight Doom, who altered their speed and then made them older. H.E.R.B.I.E. infiltrated the Tower and used it to open a time portal, bringing Iron Man, Scarlet Witch, and Falcon in as toddlers. The toddlers attacked Doom while Wolverine and Hulk arrived and fought M.O.D.O.K. and Abomination. The Super Hero Squad defeated Doom, M.O.D.O.K., and Abomination while H.E.R.B.I.E. returned them to their proper age. Doom was turned into a toddler while the Super Hero Squad returned to their world.[8]Residents
