Hi. To me, there is one thing that Emacs implements that no other program I know of manages to do. I seldomly hear this property mentioned by anyone else, so even if it scratches OT-ness, I wanted to get this out to people to ponder over, or even be proud of. Emacs is the only serious program I know which manages to be truely user interface independent, in addition to being platform-independent. E

Hi. I've written a JIT compiler for Emacs Lisp, and I'd like to check it in. This JIT is based on GNU libjit, like some other attempts that have come before it. However, this one is somewhat faster than those, primarily because it does all stack manipulations at compile time, not runtime. In some simple benchmarks, it is about 3x faster than the bytecode interpreter. I have only tested this on x86

Otherwise, a lot of Japanese text will stop working, due to the expected abdication of Emperor Akihito in April 2019, and the use of a new character in Japanese-format dates. This differs from ordinary Unicode updates, since the new character is li

Hi everyone, I'm not a member of Bash developers, but I would like to leave comments as one of Bash users. ---------- I don't agree with changing the default behavior that removes the placeholder of previous-context variables. The reason is just backward compatibility, but it's important. For example, there is actually a widely-used technique, "local $1 && upvar $1", relying on the behavior of "un
Hello everyone, I'm typing this in a version of Emacs that uses the SpiderMonkey (Mozilla's JavaScript engine) garbage collector, which I've just succeeded in starting for the first time. It's an experiment, and I'm perfectly happy to abandon it and leave with what I've learned; but I think it's an interesting experiment, and it might help those actually wanting to use a different garbage collecto

I recently had to copy a lot of files and even though I've 20 years experience with various Unix variants I was still surprised by the behaviour of cp and I think my observations should be shared with the community.
