Zootopia 2 is an American 3D computer-animated buddy cop comedy film produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Pictures. Directed by Jared Bush and Byron Howard, the film is a sequel to the 2016 film Zootopia. It is the 64th animated feature in the Disney Animated Canon, and was released on November 26, 2025.

Synopsis[]

Detectives Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde must go undercover in Marsh Market to crack the case when they find themselves on the twisting trail of a mysterious reptile.

Plot[]

Following the arrest and incarceration of Dawn Bellwether, Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde are hailed as heroes. Now partners in the ZPD, the duo continues to go out and catch criminals, eventually becoming detectives. Their actions, however, have become increasingly erratic, in part, due to Judy's determination and Nick's inability to take anything seriously.

Against Chief Bogo's wishes, Nick and Judy, along with Finnick, pose as a family to get close to Antony Snootley, a suspected criminal passing off as a dock inspector, and try and out any contraband he has hidden. He catches on their scheme and he flees, with the duo in pursuit. Judy's reckless driving causes major damage across Zootopia and ends with the destruction of the statue of one of Zootopia's founders, Ebenezer Lynxley, presided over by the newly elected mayor, and former action film star, Brian Winddancer. Judy catches a glimpse of something resembling a snake slithering away and even finds some shed scales. As Judy and Nick arrived back, Bogo rages at Nick and Judy for their actions in attempting to stop Antony, who has been arrested by the Zebros, and refuses to listen to the latter's observations. He adds that because of what the duo has done, he is concerned over having to separate the two of them and demands that they get their act together by sending them to partner counseling with Dr. Fuzzby.

Fuzzby immediately deduces that Judy has a habit of taking lead without consulting with Nick, and that she feels constant stress, while Nick is self-conscious and hides this with his humor, which he does as a defense mechanism. The duo is annoyed at Fuzzby's diagnosis, but agree to try and work harder so that they can keep their positions at the ZPD. Judy plans another meeting with Bogo, while Nick is getting her a big carrot soda from the vending machine, which he accidentally throws it through the wall to the office, where Paul Moledebrandt is working on the computer and gets sprayed away by the soda.

At their respective homes, Nick lounges around his apartment without doing any of the required work while Judy studies hard and tries to avoid conversing with her talkative parents. She gets distracted by the news and notices that one of the vans attending a gala that celebrates the "Zootennial", an anniversary of the founding of Zootopia in its 100th year, being held by the Lynxleys resembles the van that Antony was driving before. Believing the two vans are connected, Judy recruits a reluctant Nick to go sneak into the gala. Upon arriving, Judy proceeds to get close to Ebenezer's journal, which is being presented. She also meets Pawbert Lynxley, the youngest son of Milton Lynxley, whom she immediately befriends, which leads Nick to grow envious of Pawbert. Nick also spots a hooded figure, but before he can warn Judy, he gets caught by Bogo. However, Nick manages to get everyone's attention of the hooded figure while Milton was welcoming everyone to the Zootenial Gala.

The hooded figure reveals himself as Gary De'Snake, a blue pit viper, who steals the journal and kidnaps Milton. Judy gives chase, eventually cornering them in the Lynxley den. Gary insists that he stole the journal, because he wants to get his family to come back home, and that Milton is actually the bad guy. Nick arrives and, not knowing the situation, knocks Gary out with a frying pan. Milton and his two elder children Cattrick and Kitty arrive, demanding that Nick and Judy kill Gary and keep the whole situation on the downlow. A scuffle occurs with Bogo entering just as Gary accidentally bites him in the head thanks to Milton, losing one of his fangs, and knocking out Bogo. As Judy pulls the fang out, she is spotted by Captain Hoggbottom, who quickly assumes that she attacked Bogo and betrayed law enforcement due to Kitty's lies and her twisting the truth regarding Bogo's injury. Nick, Judy, and Gary escape with the journal, only for Gary to be taken by a masked figure on a motorcycle.

Nick and Judy are rescued by Mr. Big, who now runs an apparel side business with Fru Fru, so that he can spend time with his granddaughter Judith. He creates fake passports for the duo, but Judy refuses them as she now wants to stop the Lynxleys. Mr. Big reveals that the Lynxleys have always been involved in the criminal underworld and that it is nearly impossible for the duo to take them down due to how much power the Lynxleys have (they were apparently the ones who built the weather walls in Zootopia). Nick wants to escape Zootopia, but Judy urges him to stay and help Gary. With help from Fru Fru, they contact podcaster Nibbles Maplestick, who has long argued about the existence of reptiles in Zootopia, which Judy had been watching lately on one of Nibbles' podcasts. Meanwhile, after Bogo is taken to the hospital, Milton furiously urges Winddancer to send the ZPD after Nick and Judy after having branded them as criminals for the Lynxleys' crimes.

Nibbles takes Nick and Judy to Marsh Market, an area of Zootopia that is struggling due to the Lynxleys' plan to pave over it with an expansion of Tundratown. They arrive at a sunken ship that turns out to be a hideout for reptiles. Nibbles introduces the duo to Jesús, who examines the journal, which has a metal cover, and explains that there is a secret on the cover that cannot be seen with regular mammal eyes. The ZPD, having picked up Nick's scent and being ratted out by a juggling sea lion, who was angry at Nick for his antics to him earlier, arrive, forcing the group to flee. Jesús helps the trio out of the hideout before he leaves by running on the water. Gary appears and takes the journal. Judy chases after him with Nick following close behind. Nibbles stays behind to let the ZPD arrest her so the duo can escape. Nick and Judy end up in a water tunnel, but are forced to bail due to not being able to hold their breath too long.

Lost halfway between Marsh Market and Gary's destination, Nick is upset with Judy over getting them into trouble again. They are helped by a pair of German-accented goats who inform them of an abandoned lodge at the top of the mountain that reptiles have apparently hidden out at. Nick and Judy climb up with the former playfully insulting Judy by playing with his recorder carrot pen (the same one Judy used against Nick, now a memento of their time together). As they fight over it, they drop it where it falls and breaks, angering Judy. When they get to the getaway at the top, Judy finds a collection of notes and newspaper clippings implying Zootopia's long held vilification of reptiles.

Nick sees the ZPD following the duo and tries to warn Judy, admitting that he doesn't care about the case because he didn't see this as something worth dying for. Judy sadly responds that they are maybe "too different", just as the ZPD arrive, breaking the getaway apart. Judy gets hit with a tranquilizer, but she is rescued by Gary, along with Pawbert, who was the masked figure that rescued him at the gala. While the trio escapes, Nick gets captured by the ZPD. Refusing to give up where Judy is, he gets mocked and criticized by Milton for his reckless heroism and strong feelings for Judy, and gets taken away. Judy wakes up in the company of Gary and Pawbert, who reveal that they have been working together to find out who actually founded Zootopia. Gary uses his heat vision on the journal's cover and unveils the secret, which is the hidden location of a lighthouse that reveals the way to Reptile Ravine, an abandoned reptile town. Zootopia was founded not just by mammals, but also by reptiles, particularly Gary's great-grandmother Agnes. She was framed for murder by her business partner and fellow co-founder, Ebenezer, who was Pawbert's great-grandfather. When he took credit as Zootopia's founder, he pushed the reptiles out of Zootopia and paved over their home. Realizing that the remnants of Reptile Ravine, and proof of the De'Snakes being one of the many founders, are hidden in the corners of Tundratown, the trio ventures off.

Nick is thrown in jail where he discovers that he is situated across Nibbles. She gets him to open up about why he refused to help Judy, because he cares about her too much, and doesn't want to lose her. Nibbles gets herself and Nick free, but are forced to run from the ZPD and 200 prisoners, including Bellwether, after they are accidentally released while both Nick and Nibbles attempted to escape. In a need of trying to escape, Nick calls upon Flash to come and pick him and Nibbles up.

Judy, Gary, and Pawbert cut through the desert of Sahara Square, but the ZPD are on their tails. They rush through the Burning Mammal Festival and get help from Gazelle and her tiger dancers, who beat up the Zebros (Gazelle has a grudge against them for shoving one of her tigers back at the Zootenial Gala). Clawhauser helps Nick and Nibbles by pinpointing Judy's location and Flash rushes them there. Hoggbottom is ordered to shoot Judy with a lethal dart. She is reluctant to do so due to her strong sense of honor in law enforcement and fires the dart off accidentally, but Flash stops it with his car. The two groups run into Sahara Square's weather wall, but Nick is accidentally locked out.

Judy, Gary, and Pawbert rush to the top of the tower to find a switch to turn on the lighthouse. Nibbles rescues Nick from the weather wall heater at the last minute, but Pawbert double-crosses by injecting Judy with snake venom, and tosses Gary into the cold. Pawbert reveals that he is looking for the original Zootopia foundation papers to destroy them, so that he can finally be accepted by his vile father and his older siblings, not wanting to be "different" from them. He leaves the duo to die while taking Gary's fanny pack (containing the anti-venom) and goes after Nibbles, whom he poisons, and Nick, whom he corners on the top of the weather wall.

Gary uses his strength through the cold to warm himself up with Judy's body heat just as the ZPD arrive. A fight breaks out and simultaneously, Nick and Pawbert fight on top of the wall. Nick forces Pawbert to drop the fanny pack's contents and spots Gary, trying to get the anti-venom pen out for him. Pawbert tries to discourage Nick by stating "it's not worth dying for", which Nick replies by remembering what Judy said "agree to disagree", and he successfully tosses the pen down. Gary catches it and cures Judy, who rushes up and saves Nick from falling off the wall with Pawbert. When they become emotional from what they had been through to that moment following their separation, Nick and Judy finally reveal their insecurities and strong feelings to each other; Nick has always wanted to be part of a "pack", and pushes people away because he has always been solitary while Judy admits that she doesn't like being seen as "weak" and just wants acceptance from others. They tell each other the only one who matters more than anyone else in the world to them is the other. Gary cures Nibbles just as the quartet spots Pawbert (who somehow survived the fall) trying to get to the lighthouse.

Judy, Nick, Gary, and Nibbles chase Pawbert, who cuts through his family home and gets caught by his father until he reveals his plan to the whole family. Nick and Judy continue to chase Pawbert, while Gary and Nibbles distract and take on the other Lynxleys. During the fight, Nibbles, who sees good inside Winddancer, urges him to be a real hero. He stands up for himself and takes out the Lynxleys like he did as his film character in The Neighslayer 2. Nick and Judy chase down Pawbert through a maze and with Gary and Nibbles' help, they manage to finally subdue Pawbert and tie him up.

The quartet arrives at the abandoned reptile town through the lighthouse and enters Agnes's old house. They find Agnes's original patent, the proof of Zootopia's founding, only for Pawbert to arrive in one final effort to defeat the quartet. Fortunately, he is knocked out by Hoggbottom the same way Nick did to Gary. The true story of Zootopia's founding and weather wall foundation is spread all across the mass media and the Lynxleys are all arrested and exposed as frauds and crooks, while Nick, Judy, and Gary are cleared of all charges, and Nibbles is pardoned for her illegal yet heroic deeds. With the reptiles now allowed to reintegrate into Zootopia, Nick and Judy's relationship greatly improves with the duo now teaching other ZPD partners to accept each other's differences. During Gary's housewarming party, his family finally comes home before Nick gives Judy the repaired carrot pen, this time for her to keep as a memento. Nick tells Judy he loves her, which Judy reciprocates by replaying her unexpected sudden recording of Nick's confession to her. The duo agrees to get back to work by recapturing the 200 escaped criminals that Nick accidentally freed. They immediately chase down Bellwether, who attempts to flee the city to Outback Island.

During the credits, thousands of Zootopians attend the Burning Mammal Festival and watch Gazelle perform her new hit "Zoo", a song she previously performed at the gala. Meanwhile, Winddancer resumes his mayoral duties, an annoyed and regretful Pawbert is shown in prison, wondering to himself what might have been, and with his bickering family while attempting to reconcile with his furious father, Bellwether is shown back in her cell (having been recaptured by Nick and Judy) plotting something vile, Bogo is released from the hospital after being fully recovered from Gary's accidental bite, and Duke Weaselton has been captured by Mr. Big for a reason involving "cement shoes".

In a post-credits scene, Judy puts up the carrot pen on her apartment window, only to once again be bothered by Bucky and Pronk. When she sarcastically tells them that her next case involves a rabbit who strangles her neighbors while she leaves, they continue to bicker and argue over ruining an important moment for Judy. Unbeknownst to her, a strange shadow flies by her window and leaves a brown feather behind.

Cast[]

Additionally, a rat resembling Remy from Pixar's Ratatouille makes a cameo appearance, atop the head of a lion chef, parodying Alfredo Linguini. The cast also includes Officer Grizzby, a nervous bear officer, an unnamed Sea Lion who is easily offended, threatening and antagonistic, and Agnes De'Snake, Gary's great-grandmother.

Production[]

On February 8, 2023, during the Q1 earnings call, Bob Iger confirmed that a sequel to Zootopia is in development.[1] Later that day, screenwriter Jared Bush confirmed that he is working on the film and Ginnifer Goodwin, who voices Judy Hopps, told CinemaBlend that she'd like to see a role reversal between Judy and Nick in the sequel. "I would like to see Nick have to be the one to convince Judy that the world is worth fighting for," Ginnifer said. Jason Bateman, who voices Nick Wilde, also told CinemaBlend about his idea for the sequel. "The two of us [Nick and Judy]. kicking butt out there. Cleaning up the streets. We're a couple of new cops out there. So, bad guys, be warned," he said.[2]

On February 7, 2024, during the Q1 earnings call, Bob Iger confirmed that the film would be released on November 26, 2025.[3] On March 7, 2024, Jennifer Lee confirmed that she will serves as executive producer.[4] In April 2024, Goodwin confirmed on her Instagram account that she began recording her lines for Judy, revealing that the film is in production.[5]

On August 9, 2024 at the D23 Expo, it was announced that Zootopia 2 would feature reptiles, and Ke Huy Quan was announced to be voicing Gary, a snake being pursued by Nick and Judy.[6] Footage was also shown of a sequence in which Nick and Judy search for Gary in Marsh Market.[7] The following day, Bush revealed on his X account that Fortune Feimster joined the cast to voice a beaver named Nibbles.[8] The same month, Bush was revealed to be the sole writer and director of the sequel, and Yvett Merino was revealed to be the producer. In an interview at D23, Goodwin admitted the sequel has secretly been in development since 2017.[citation needed] In September, it was announced that Byron Howard would return as director.[9]

Trivia[]

  • Two Word of God statements are disproven and/or rendered non-canon by this movie:
    • Predators (carnivores and omnivores) eat fish and invertebrates, but eating live bugs and worms is treated as disgusting except to insectivores.
    • Reptiles, marine mammals and birds are anthropomorphic in Zootopia.
  • This is the third Walt Disney Animation Studios film of the 2020s to be produced in a 2:39:1 aspect ratio after Raya and the Last Dragon and Strange World.
    • This is the eighth Disney animated film of the 2020s to be produced in a 2:39:1 aspect ratio after Onward, Soul, Raya and the Last Dragon, Lightyear, Strange World, Inside Out 2, and Elio.
  • Like Toy Story 4 and Inside Out 2, this sequel was released nine years after its predecessor. This is the first Walt Disney Animation Studios film to be released nine years after its predecessor.
  • This is the Disney work with the most Zootopia characters present in one work since Disney Heroes: Battle Mode, which has 10 characters from this movie and some others in the form of cameos.
    • To celebrate release of the movie, Disney Heroes: Battle Mode introduced a new playable character - Gazelle, becoming the 10th playable character from the franchise.
    • On the related topic, Disney Heroes: Battle Mode launched a special limited-time community event named Zootopia 2: Double Agent Fugitive Hunt on their official Discord server from November 26 to 30. The first fugitive hero is Reuben, followed by Candace Flynn, Judy Hopps, Chernabog, and Envy.
  • This is the first Zootopia film released in November, unlike the first film, which was released in March.
  • This is the first and only Disney Animated Canon film so far to be released on a perfect square year.
  • This is the first time that this franchise features reptiles and marine mammals. The post-credits scene also hints at birds being featured in a possible future third film.
  • Zootopia 2 being Disney's next movie was foreshadowed by an easter egg of Gary De'Snake being one of the woven tapestries in the credits of Moana 2.
  • During the credits, a visual of a grinning three-eyed creature is shown as an easter egg for the next film Hexed.
  • Zootopia is the twenty-ninth Walt Disney Animation Studios film to become a franchise, after Fantasia, Bambi, Saludos Amigos, Cinderella, Peter Pan, Lady and the Tramp, One Hundred and One Dalmatians, The Jungle Book, The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, The Rescuers, The Fox and the Hound, The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, The Lion King, Pocahontas, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Hercules, Mulan, Tarzan, The Emperor's New Groove, Atlantis: The Lost Empire, Lilo & Stitch, Brother Bear, Tangled, Wreck-It Ralph, Frozen, and Moana.

  • This is the first Walt Disney Animation Studios film to have the 2007 logo of Walt Disney Records since Big Hero 6.
  • The tenth Walt Disney Animation Studios film to have the voice talents in the end credits, after Bolt, Tangled, Wreck-It Ralph, Big Hero 6, Zootopia, Moana, Ralph Breaks the Internet, Strange World, and Moana 2.
  • This is the second Disney film to feature the full version of the Walt Disney Pictures closing logo (but muted) after the 2019 remake of The Lion King.
  • Much like the first film, Zootopia 2 promoted itself with Zootopian versions of recent Disney (or "Deersney") owned media.
  • The way Gary and Pawbert were knocked out with frying pans (by Nick and Hoggbottom respectively) was a reference to Tangled.
  • Additionally, when Hoggbottom knocked out Pawbert, Truffler referenced Babe after commemorating his partner with "That'll do pig, that'll do.".
  • The film reunites Stephanie Beatriz and Andy Samberg, who both co-starred in Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Ironically, Beatriz returns as a police officer and Samberg plays the villain instead.
  • The film reunites Andy Samberg and Danny Trejo, who both lend their voices in Storks. This movie was released the same year the first Zootopia was released. In Storks, they both played heroes, while in Zootopia 2 Samberg plays the villain while Trejo plays the hero.
  • Macaulay Culkin and Brenda Song are a couple in real life, having met while filming Changeland. However, in this film, their characters are siblings.
  • John Leguizamo is the father of Allegra Leguizamo, Melissa Goodwin Shepherd is the sister of Ginnifer Goodwin, Jared Bush's own children, Hewitt, Emmitt, and Merrick co-star with him, and Shakira's two sons, Milan and Sasha Piqué make their acting debuts in this film. Additionally, Jake Robards, son of actor and Disney veteran Jason Robards, has a role.
  • This is Macaulay Culkin's first Disney film.
    • It is also Culkin's first animated film in general since 20th Century Studios' The Pagemaster in 1994 (which, ironically, Disney currently owns the domestic rights for under said label).
  • This film reunites Moana actors Auli'i Cravalho, Dwayne Johnson, and Rachel House, as well as Encanto actors Stephanie Beatriz, Wilmer Valderrama, and John Leguizamo.
  • In one scene, Duke Weaselton is seen selling bootlegged films and shows, all of which are animal variants of one of Walt Disney Animation Studios' previous films, three films from Disney's other studios (Marvel Studios and Lucasfilm), and one of that in-house studio's upcoming films and Disney live actions. In addition, an animal variant of a non-Disney film is present. Those include:
    • Wrangled (Live-action) - Tangled (Live-action)
    • Indillama Jones and the Pre-dooming of the Temple - Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
    • Floatzen 12 - Frozen
    • The Pandalorian - The Mandalorian

  • This is the seventh Disney Animated Canon film in which the Walt Disney Animation Studios logo doesn't feature the Steamboat Willie theme after Frozen, Moana, Frozen II, Raya and the Last Dragon, Encanto, and Moana 2.
  • This is the first Disney Animated Canon film in which the cast section in the credits have two columns instead of the usual one.
  • This is the first Zootopia film to feature a post-credit scene.
  • Despite the fact that Peter Moosebridge was renamed “Moosos Alexander” and was voiced by Vassos Alexander in the UK cinema version of the first film, the UK cinema version of the sequel has his US name and voice intact.
  • Real world ocean liners RMS Titanic and RMS Queen Mary makes an appearance Titanic at the shipyard and Queen Mary on the Zootennial flyer.
  • The film includes a collaboration with the Korean boy group Stray Kids.
    • During the reprise of "Zoo" at the end of the film, a young sheep can be seen wearing a t-shirt featuring all of the SKZOO characters (Stray Kids' animal mascots) as well as holding a Stray Kids lightstick.
    • Additionally, a pop-up store opened in Seoul which sold exclusive merchandise for the SKZOO and Zootopia 2 characters.
  • Because of its premiere in 2025, this marks the first time where a year ending in the number 5 does not have an original Disney animated film (not counting The Three Caballeros, as it technically first premiered in 1944 despite it being domestically released in the U.S. a year later).
  • This film is remarkable for having its end credits list its cast in more than one bar instead of just a singular one (like how most Disney animated films would do); two, to be precise.
    • This is probably done to reflect the fact that this is the second Zootopia film (as well as the matter of itself having a particularly large ensemble cast).
  • This is the first Disney movie from Walt Disney Animation Studios to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated feature since Encanto.
