Searchlight Pictures (formerly known as Fox Searchlight Pictures, Inc. prior to 2020) is a film studio that was acquired by The Walt Disney Company in 2019. As a part of 20th Century Studios, Searchlight specializes in North American production of independent British and European films across multiple genres. Searchlight's Slumdog Millionaire, 12 Years a Slave, Birdman, and The Shape of Water have all won the Academy Award for Best Picture.
History
After years of Fox releasing independent films under the 20th Century-Fox International Classics banner, Fox Searchlight Pictures was created by Thomas Rothman, who would be its first president and would eventually serve as CEO of Fox Filmed Entertainment, over a career with the company that would last 18 years.
On March 20, 2019, the company was acquired, along with most of 21st Century Fox's assets. On January 17, 2020, along with 20th Century Studios, the studio was renamed to Searchlight Pictures.

Notes
- Despite not being co-branded with "Disney", all of the Searchlight Pictures films (while itself continue to produce those as well) are distributed under the Walt Disney Pictures label through Buena Vista International in the UK and other countries; with Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures currently handling distribution; while Searchlight continues to operate its own autonomous theatrical distribution and marketing unit in the US only.
