Gameplay[]
Ziggurat is a first person shooter roguelike that uses procedurally generated scenarios and encounters. Unlike most other roguelikes, a core feature of Ziggurat is that it relies on mainly combat skill as opposed to luck. Reminiscent of the controls in classic games such as Quake, Doom 2 and Heretic/Hexen, Ziggurat relies a lot on fast reactions and constant movement of the player character. Little strategy in terms of long term planning is required; however, quick decisions in attacks and movement decide success.
Levelling up allows for perks, which are selected randomly, to be chosen, allowing great differences in play styles within each game. No two games are the same; the random generation from a wide variety of weapons, rooms, perks and amulets allow for high replay value. These items are also unlocked with every playthrough, usually after character deaths. Different characters with different playstyles and features are also unlocked through player achievements.
Although there is currently no multiplayer feature within Ziggurat, scoreboards allow players to compete with one another. An endless feature, should you unlock it through finishing Normal mode, allows you to continue the game past the final floor.
Permadeath is another key feature of Ziggurat, with dying on the first few floors being a relatively common occurrence. However, deaths also allow items to be unlocked in the armoury, making player death a necessity in order to improve the player's chances of finishing.
