Barbara Jean Thommen, our cherished Mom, Sister, and beloved Grama passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 15, 2024, surrounded by family.
Born on January 16, 1941, in Yankton, South Dakota, to William and Irene Nooney, she was the fourth of ten children in a loving Catholic family. Her life was a testament to the importance of faith, family, and friendship.
In 1962, Barbara ventured from her small-town roots to pursue her dreams in the bustling city of Seattle, where she began her career as a flight attendant with United Airlines. It was in Seattle that she reunited with the love of her life, Tom Thommen. Together, they built a beautiful home in Magnolia and were blessed with two children, Molly Shutes and Tommy Thommen. She spent her years surrounded by family and friends, building lasting connections with all who were lucky enough to know her.
Barbara was a dedicated member of the Katherine Meloy Circle for over 60 years, beginning in 1965, devoting her life to helping others. Known for her remarkable warmth and generosity, she welcomed everyone into her home, especially during the holidays, ensuring no one felt alone. Holidays were her favorite time of year; she would prepare her iconic dishes, such as oyster stew for Christmas Eve and corned beef on Saint Patrickâs Day. Barb and Tom would surround themselves with laughter, music, and the warmth of loved ones. It was her way of showing how deeply she cared for those around her. Her open heart and kind spirit left an indelible mark on all who knew her.
Barbara was predeceased by her husband, Tom Thommen. She is survived by her daughter, Molly Shutes; her son, Tommy Thommen; her son-in-law, Scott Shutes; her granddaughter, Sarah Shutes; and her great-grandchildren, Bodhi Winslow and Poppy Jean. She also leaves behind her sisters Bonnie Bilder (New Jersey), Carol Anderson (Minnesota), Colleen Thompson (Texas), Mary Lee Stewart (South Dakota), Theresa Allen (Kansas), and Bridget Fitchner (South Dakota), along with a large extended family and many dear friends.
We were profoundly blessed to have Barbara â our Mom, Grama, and Gigi â in our lives. Her love, generosity, and unwavering support will remain forever in our hearts.
Barbara, you are deeply loved and will always be remembered. Your memory will live on in the lives you touched.
A service will be held at Our Lady of Fatima, 3218 West Barrett Street, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. January 16th, 2025.
