Safar Calendar
Safar is the second month of the Islamic calendar. The meaning of the name Safar is empty. The name Safar is because Arabs used to travel and left their houses for trade this month. The second reason is that when Arabs noticed that many of their people die this month, they name the month Safar. In the Islamic calendar, a month is named on the weather conditions too.
There are many misconceptions about the Safar. People use to stay in their houses and do not travel for trade or any important purpose. Marriages do not happen this month. People often do the following acts to take the bad luck or mishappenings away from them.
- People do not arrange marriages this month.
- They do charity.
- People boil flour balls and distribute them to family, friends, neighbors, and relatives.
- Some people also recite Surah Muzamil 313 times.
Allah Almighty mentioned in Quran Kareem that misconceptions are not present in any Islamic month. The superstitions are self-created by the man himself; they are not true about the Safar or any other Islamic calendar month.
Major Islamic events in Safar
The significant events that happen in Islamic history in the month of Safar are listed below:
- The Holy Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (SAW) migrated from Makkah to Madina on 27th Safar.
- On 1st Safar, prisoners of the Karbala entered the Yazeed's palace.
- Sakina bin-te Hussain (RA), the beloved youngest daughter of Imam Hussain (RA), died in the month of Safar. She (RA) was the prisoner of the Karbala.
- The two famous battles of Islamic history, Abwaa, and Khyber took place in Safar.
- The beloved daughter of Hazrat Muhammad (SAW), Hazrat Fatima (RA), was married to Hazrat Ali (RA) in Safar.
Safar is one of the important months of Islam. Due to lack of education, few Muslims link many superstitions with it. In reality, this month is free of any bad luck or dark side.
