The first half of the high school boys’ wrestling season is complete. Wrestlers have just five weeks before the postseason. Teams and individual performances have highlighted the opening weeks. Here are five notable performances before the holiday break.
The Battle of Waterloo didn’t disappoint and Alburnett left with a runner-up finish to Class 3A power southeast Polk. Iowa State competed at the Collegiate Duals. Cornell, Luther impressed at the Gator Boots Duals in Tennessee and more in the Wrestling Weekend That Was.
Top-ranked Shayden Washburn was one of four Alburnett champions Saturday at the J-Hawk Invitational hosted by Cedar Rapids Jefferson. The Pirates won the team title by 81 points over Waukee Northwest.
No. 2 Iowa State simply couldn’t shoot straight from 3-point range Saturday at West Virginia, and its 1-of-17 performance from beyond the arc helped pave the way for a draining and dispiriting 64-57 loss in Morgantown, W.Va.
