WAR IS DECLARED ON SECURITY GANGSTERS.

Byline: LORRAINE DAVIDSON Scottish Political Editor

CROOKS who launder cash through Scotland's private security firms are facing a tough new government crackdown.

Deputy Justice Minister Iain Gray yesterday revealed plans to drive the criminals out of an industry which has become a haven for drug dealers, extortion gangs and thugs in recent years.

In future, private security companies will have to prove they are reputable before they are allowed to trade.

Unveiling a consultation document yesterday, containing a number of new measures designed to bring the sector under stricter control, Mr Gray said: "There is a clear need for tighter controls across the whole industry.

"The security sector has grown enormously in recent years and it is vital we have a common regulation system in Scotland covering every organisation in the industry."

Once the consultation period is over in November the Scottish Executive is expected to give councils the power to vet and license firms operating in their areas.
