Bells ring out for Ruth's day.
CHURCH bells rang out across Monks Kirby to celebrate the 100th birthday of the village's first female ringer.Centenarian Ruth Pittham took up the art of campanology in her mid 20s and made her last visit to the ringing room at St Edith's when she was 80.
The present-day ringers also marked her birthday by ringing handbells at a party in her honour at the village hall on Saturday afternoon.
Mrs Pittham, of St Edith's Close, was born in Long Itchington and moved to Monks Kirby 75 years ago with her husband, Thomas, a farm worker from Warwick. The couple had three daughters, Florence, Zena and Brenda. All five generations of Mrs Pittham's family helped her to celebrate, including her grandson Don, who travelled over from New Zealand.
Daughter Florence, aged 77, said: "She had a wonderful time. She really enjoyed it."
