The Nature of Art
Art constitute one of the oldest and most
important means of expression developed
by man.
In every country, art shows itself in
primitive societies.
A true work of art is made by man himself
not imitative, but creative.
A true artist does not imitate nature but
rather interpret it in his own way by
selecting the essential features of the
subject.

their time and faces environment that

The Subject of the Art
The subject of art is usually anything
that is represented in the artwork. It may
be a person, object, scene or event.
Artwork that depict something easily
recognized by most people are called
representational or objective arts.
e.g painting, sculpture, graphic arts,
literature and theatre arts, although
some paintings and sculptures are
without subject.
The Subject of the Art
Artworks that have no resemblance to
any real subject are called non-
representational or non-objective arts.
They do not represent anything and they
are what they are. Many of the modern
paintings have purely visual appeal; so
difficult that literal-oriented spectators
cannot appreciate them.

1. Aesthetic function – through art, man
becomes conscious of the beauty of
nature. He learns to use, love, and
preserve them for his enjoyment.
2. Utilitarian function – with the creation of
the various forms of art, man now lives
in comfort and happiness.
Function of Art
3. Cultural function – through the printed
matter, art transmit and preserve skills
and knowledge from one generation to
another. It makes man more civilized.
4. Social function – through civic and
graphic arts, man learns to love and
help each other.
Through the humanities we reflect on the
fundamental question:
What does it mean to be human?
The humanities offer clues but never a
complete answer. They reveal how people
have tried to make moral, spiritual, and
intellectual sense of a world in which
irrationality, despair, loneliness, and death
are as conspicuous as birth, friendship,
hope, and reason.
