“The Queen of the
South”
“ This refers to the body of oral and written
literature of speakers of Cebuano, the mother
tongue of most of a quarter of the country’s
population.
Cebuanos have a rich oral tradition including
legends associated with specific locales.

1. Marcelino M. Navarra
was a Filipino Visayan editor, poet,
and writer from Cebu, Philippines. He
used realism and depictions of
fictionalized version of his hometown,
barrio Tuyom in Carcar, Cebu.

2. Antonio Abad
Abad was one of the leading contributors
of Hispano-Filipino literature during his time,
producing novels and plays criticizing the
occupation of the islands by the Americans.
His works would later be known as part of
the Golden Age of Fil-Hispanic Literature
(1898-1941).

3. Martin Abellana
He was a Filipino Visayan writer. He
was a teacher by profession. In the years
1956 to 1958, he was president of the
LUDABI, a group of writers in Cebuano.
His novels are characterized by a concern
for the working class.

4. Gardeopatra Gador Quijano
She was a Filipino Visayan dentist,
teacher, writer, and fiction author known
for her novel, Lourdes, which is regarded
as the first feminist novel written in the
Cebuano language. She is considered the
first Cebuana feminist fiction writer.

5. Vicente Rama
He was a Filipino Visayan legislator,
publisher, and writer from Cebu, Philippines.
He authored the bill for its cityhood which
was approved into law. He also founded the
leading pre-war Cebuano periodical, Bag-ong
Kusog.
