The Novels of

the Genius
Life and Works of Rizal
Brief History of the Two Novels
● The novels of Dr. Jose P. Rizal were both products of his inspiration to expose what his countrymen
were experiencing under the Spanish colonizers and of his administrations to so many novels at
different great authors like Alexander Dumas of the novel "The Count of Montecristo" and Harriet
Beecher Stowe of the novel "Uncle Tom's Cabin".

● Rizal's first novel, Noli Me Tangere, was published in 1887; by then Rizal had already been living for
four years in Europe. The purpose of the novel was very merely to raise political consciousness
concerning the current condition of affairs in the Philippines.

● In 1887, during his stay in Berlin, Germany, Jose Rizal made his final touch in his prolific novel Noli
Me Tangere and with the financial help of his friend Dr. Maximo Viola the first novel was published
at Berliner Buchdruckrei-Action-Gesselschaft which charged him the lowest rate of 300 pesos for
2,000 copies.

● The freedom that they enjoyed in Spain was very inconsistent, criticizing the Spanish government
through published materials was not that easy.

● Jose Rizal began the sequel of his first novel on October 1887 while he was practicing medicine in
Calamba Laguna.
