LEARNING OUTLINE
Pre-lesson:
Remind pupils of the story in the Pupil’s Book, pp.96–97 with a pre-lesson task from
Section 3 above
Lesson development: -
1. Pupils re-read the story and identify the main events. (Activity 1) (HOTS)
2. Pupils make notes about the main events of the story. (Activity 2)
3. Pupils read a model story summary. (Activity 3)
4. Return pupils’ work to them from Lesson 114. Have them read the comments. They compare their summary to
the structure shown in Activity 2, which they completed in Step 3.
5. Using their previous versions of the summary and their notes in Activity 2, pupils write their own summary of the
story in pairs. (Activity 4) (CBA)
6. Monitor and help pairs write their summaries. Gather examples of common mistakes for Step 7.
7. Collect their work at the end of the lesson and review it to see where there has been improvement and what still
needs work.

Write some common mistakes on the board and have pupils correct them in small

LEARNING OUTLINE
Pre-lesson:
Pre-lesson Task 8: Predict The Content to review key language (if clauses).
Lesson development: -
1. Use the pictures from the topic cards to introduce each topic and have pupils brainstorm words related to each
topic in small groups. (21stCA)
2. Pupils work in groups of about six. They sit in a circle. Each group has one set of cards. A pupil takes a card and
makes a future prediction about that topic using a modal verb (e.g. holidays: We might go to Japan in the
holidays; environment: the rainforest might disappear in the future.) They pass the card to the pupil on their right,
who also makes a sentence. Each sentence should be different, as far as possible. This pupil passes the card
and so on. Repeat for all cards. (hots)
3. Have pupils work in pairs in the groups of six. Pupil A takes a topic card and makes a prediction using the card
(these can be similar to previous ones if they have run out of ideas); pupil B then makes an if clause, e.g. Pupil A:
We might go to Japan in the holidays. Pupil B: If you go to Japan in the holidays, you could visit the temples in
Kyoto. They exchange roles for the next card and continue until they have used all the cards.
4. In pairs, pupils choose a topic. They write sentences using the target language in their notebooks. (CBA)
5. Give feedback by asking pupils to read their favourite sentences to the class. Ask the class to decide which one
is most original.

Relate the task to writing skills e.g. topic vocabulary, spelling, punctuation.

Lesson development: -
1. Pupils in pairs do p.64, Activity 4, Use It! Pupils compare with partners which piece of information they thought
was the most interesting. Find out how many pairs had the same piece of information. (21st CA)
2. Write on board sentence starters e.g. ‘I really like watching…’, ‘I prefer watching…’, ‘I sometimes/usually like
watching…’. Pupils write two or three sentences about sports they like watching. They exchange with a partner
and compare sentences. Ask pairs: Are any sports the same? Choose pupils to read their sentences aloud. Find
out the sport most pupils like watching. Ask: Which sport do you not like watching and why? (HOTS)
3. Pupils look at Rules p.65, Activity 1. Write on board: ‘was’, ‘wasn’t’, ‘were’, ‘weren’t’. Pupils look at years on the
Olympics Timeline again and write down past verbs in them.
4. Explain pupils are going to read a story about a race called the Marathon. They do Activity 2.

Lesson development: -
1. Pre-teach ‘marathon’. Explain pupils are going to read a story about the first marathon. They do p.65, Activity 4.
Pupils check where they put the apostrophe in wasn’t and weren’t. Explain the apostrophe shows where a letter
is missing. Ask: Which letter is missing? (o)
2. Pupils in pairs or in groups of three do Activity 5, Use It! Pupils tell each other their sentences and decide which
are the same and which are different. Choose pupils to read a sentence aloud. (CBA)
3. Pupils do Activity 6. Do the first sentence as a model.
4. Pupils do Activity 8. Read the example aloud. Check answers. Pupils in pairs say sentences and write numbers

Lesson development: -
1. Clear a space in the classroom and divide pupils into 4 groups.
2. Put the 4 sets of pictures on 4 chairs, one chair near each group.
3. Give instructions, e.g. Put the banana on a table.
4. One pupil in each group follows your instructions. This is not a race: the idea is simply to follow the instruction
accurately.
5. Continue for a few rounds, with a new pupil in each group following your instructions each time.
6. You can make instructions more complex, when necessary, e.g. Put the apple and the cheese sandwich under a
bag OR Put the sausages under the chair and the cake on a notebook.
7. After a few rounds, ask pupils to give the instructions in each group. Make sure that different pupils have a

together with the whole class for the first 2 lines of verse 2 of the song. Help pupils with new vocabulary as
appropriate

1. Divide pupils into pairs or small groups and ask them to create a new song.
2. Provide pupils with a language frame to help them structure the song. Put the first verse (which is also verse 3
and 5) on the board or a handout, with a blank in place of Tommy’s, and for verses 2 and 4, write:

3. Pupils create their song. They can write the song down but must also be able to sing it. (HOTS)
