EUCHARISTIC CELEBRATION FOR ASH WEDNESDAY

INTRO:

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent and is a time for

repentance and reflection. The Mass readings for Ash Wednesday
emphasize the importance of returning to God with fasting and a
contrite heart, seeking mercy and reconciliation, and performing good
deeds with sincerity rather than for show.
It is a day to remember that we are God’s creation, made from the dust
of the Earth as we receive the ashes on our heads with a sense of
sorrow for our shortcomings, but also with a sense of hope. With God’s
grace we can repent.
With this in mind we all stand and greet Christ in the person of His
priest, Rev. Fr. Winly P. Guadalupe

1
Entrance Song:

SAVE US O LORD

Refrain:
Save us, O Lord; carry us back.
Rouse your power and come.
Rescue your people; show us your face.
Bring us back.

1. O Shepherd of Israel, hear us.

Return and we shall be saved.
Arise, O Lord; hear our cries, O Lord:
bring us back!

2. How long will you hide from your people?

We long to see your face.
Give ear to us.
Draw near to us.
Lord God of hosts!

PRIEST: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy
Spirit.

ALL: Amen.

2
PRIEST: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of
God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you
all.

ALL: And with your spirit.

(The Penitential Act is omitted, and the Distribution of Ashes takes its place.)

PRIEST: Let us pray.

Grant, O Lord, that we may begin with holy fasting this
campaign of Christian service, so that, as we take up battle
against spiritual evils, we may be armed with weapons of
self-restraint. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who
lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God,
for ever and ever

ALL: Amen.

COMMENTATOR: Please be seated and let us now listen to the

readings.
LITURGY OF THE WORD

FIRST READING

A reading from the Book of the Prophet Joel (2:12-18)

3
Even now, says the LORD, return to me with your whole heart, with
fasting, and weeping, and mourning; Rend your hearts, not your
garments, and return to the LORD, your God. For gracious and
merciful is he, slow to anger, rich in kindness, and relenting in
punishment. Perhaps he will again relent and leave behind him a
blessing, Offerings and libations for the LORD, your God. Blow the
trumpet in Zion! Proclaim a fast, call an assembly; Gather the people,
notify the congregation;

Assemble the elders, gather the children and the infants at the breast;
Let the bridegroom quit his room and the bride her chamber. Between
the porch and the altar let the priests, the ministers of the LORD,
weep, And say, “Spare, O LORD, your people, and make not your
heritage a reproach, with the nations ruling over them! Why should
they say among the peoples, ‘Where is their God? Then the
LORD was stirred to concern for his land and took pity on his people.

The Word of the Lord.

ALL: Thanks be to God

RESPONSORIAL PSALM:

Be merciful, O Lord, for we have sinned.

1. Have mercy on me, O God, in your goodness;

in the greatness of your compassion wipe out my offense.
Thoroughly wash me from my guilt
and of my sin cleanse me.

2. For I acknowledge my offense,

and my sin is before me always:
Against you only have I sinned,
4
and done what is evil in your sight.

3. A clean heart create for me, O God,

and a steadfast spirit renew within me.
Cast me not out from your presence,
and your Holy Spirit take not from me.

4. Give me back the joy of your salvation,

and a willing spirit sustain in me.
O Lord, open my lips,
and my mouth shall proclaim your praise.

SECOND READING

A reading from the second Letter of Saint Paul to the

Corinthians (5:20-6:2)

Brothers and sisters: We are ambassadors for Christ, as if God

were appealing through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ,
be reconciled to God. For our sake he made him to be sin who did
not know sin, so that we might become the righteousness of God
in him. Working together, then, we appeal to you not to receive
the grace of God in vain. For he says: In an acceptable time I
heard you, and on the day of salvation I helped you. Behold, now
is a very acceptable time; behold, now is the day of salvation.

The Word of the Lord.

ALL: Thanks be to God

COMMENTATOR: Please all stand to honor the Holy Gospel
All: SONG - Glory and praise to You O Lord Jesus Christ. We have
stilled our hearts and now we listen to your Word. Glory
5
and praise to You O Lord Jesus Christ.

PRIEST: The Lord be with you.

ALL: And with your spirit.

PRIEST: A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew

ALL: Glory to you, O Lord.
Matthew 6:1-6,16-18

Jesus said to his disciples: "Take care not to perform righteous deeds

in order that people may see them; otherwise, you will have no

recompense from your heavenly Father. When you give alms, do not

blow a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and

in the streets to win the praise of others. Amen, I say to you, they have

know what your right is doing, so that your almsgiving may be secret.

And your Father who sees in secret will repay you. "When you pray,

do not be like the hypocrites, who love to stand and pray in the

synagogues and on street corners so that others may see them.

Amen, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you

pray, go to your inner room, close the door, and pray to your Father in

secret. And your Father who sees in secret will repay you. "When you

fast, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites. They neglect their
6
appearance, so that they may appear to others to be fasting. Amen, I

say to you, they have received their reward. But when you fast, anoint

your head and wash your face, so that you may not appear to be
fasting,

except to your Father who is hidden. And your Father who sees what is

hidden will repay you."

PRIEST: The Gospel of the Lord.

ALL: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

HOMILY:
Commentator: Please all stand.

Blessing and Distribution of Ashes

After the Homily, the Priest, standing with hands joined, says:

Dear brethren (brothers and sisters), let us humbly ask God our Father
that he be pleased to bless with the abundance of his grace
these ashes, which we will put on our heads in penitence.

After a brief prayer in silence, and, with hands extended, he

continues:

O God, who are moved by acts of humility and respond with

forgiveness

to works of penance, lend your merciful ear to our prayers and in your

7
kindness pour out the grace of your blessing on your servants who are

marked with these ashes, that, as they follow the Lenten observances,

they may be worthy to come with minds made pure to celebrate the

Paschal Mystery of your Son. Through Christ our Lord

All: Amen.

He sprinkles the ashes with holy water, without saying anything.

Then the Priest places ashes on the head of all those present who
come to him, and says to each one:

Repent, and believe in the Gospel.

Or:

Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return.

ALL : SONG - ASHES

We Rise Again From Ashes, From The Good We’ve Failed To Do.
We Rise Again From Ashes, To Create Ourselves Anew.
If All The World Is Ashes, Then Must Our Lives Be True,
An Offering Of Ashes, An Offering To You.

We Offer You Our Failures, We Offer You Attempts,

The Gifts Not Fully Given, The Dreams Not Fully Dreamt
Give Our Stumbling’s Direction, Give Our Visions Wider View
An Offering Of Ashes, An Offering To You

Then Rise Again From Ashes, Let Healing Come To Pain,

Though Spring Has Turned To Winter, And Sunshine Turned To Rain,

8
The Rain We’ll Use For Growing And Create The World Anew
From An Offering Of Ashes, An Offering To You.

Thanks Be To The Father, Who Made Us Like Himself,

Thanks Be To The Son, Who Saved Us By His Death;
Thanks Be To The Spirit, Who Creates The World Anew,
From An Offering Of Ashes, An Offering To You.

After the distribution of ashes, the Priest washes his hands and
proceeds to the Universal Prayer, and continues the Mass in the
usual way.

* The Creed is not said.

. PRAYERS OF THE FAITHFUL

Priest: As we begin the season of Lent, let us pray to our heavenly

Father to open our hearts through prayer, fasting , and active
works of charity. We pray.
LORD, LET YOUR MERCY BE UPON US.
1. May the people of God welcome Lent as an acceptable time of
salvation through their works of fasting, prayer, and sharing. We
pray
2. May the ministers of the Church, through the preaching of the
Word of God, inspire the faithful to have a change of heart and
minds, turn away from sin, and choose to do good. We pray.
3. May government officials shun corruption and serve their
constituents in humility and honesty. We pray
9
4. May those who think they have nothing to repent of, wake up
from their self-righteousness and join the rest in asking for God’s
mercy and forgiveness. We pray.
5. May the mark of ashes on our forehead remind us of our human
fragility and brokenness and move us to walk humbly before the
Lord. We pray.

Priest: Merciful God, hear our petition. May this season of repentance
bring us your forgiveness and lead us to the joy of Christ’s
victory over sin and death. Through Christ our Lord.
All: Amen

LITURGY OF THE EUCHARIST

OFFERTORY SONG

ALL THAT WE HAVE

Chorus:
All that we have and all that we offer
Comes from a heart both frightened and free.
Take what we bring now and give what we need.
All done in his name.

Some would rely on their power,

Others put trust in their gold.
Some have only their Savior, Whose faithfulness never grows
old. Chorus

Sometimes the road may be lonesome,

10
Often we may lose our way;
Take courage and always remember
Love isn't just for a day. Chorus

Sometimes when troubles are many,

Life can seem empty, it's true,
But look at the life of the Master,
Who lovingly suffered for you. Chorus

COMMENTATOR: Please all stand.

PRIEST: Pray, brethren that may sacrifice and yours may be
acceptable to God, the almighty Father.

ALL: May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the
praise and glory of his name, for our good and the good
of all his holy Church.

PRAYER OVER THE OFFERINGS

Priest: As we solemnly offer the annual sacrifice for the

beginning
of Lent we entreat you, O Lord, that, through works of
penance and charity, we may turn away from harmful
pleasures and, cleansed from our sins, may become
worthy to celebrate devoutly the Passion of your Son.
Who lives and reigns for ever and ever.

11
ALL: Amen.

PRIEST: The Lord be with you.

ALL: And with your spirit.

PRIEST: Lift up your hearts.

ALL: We lift them up to the Lord.

PRIEST : Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

ALL: It is right and just.

PRIEST: It is truly right and just, our duty and our salvation,
always and everywhere to give you thanks, Lord, holy
Father, almighty and eternal God. For you will that our
self-denial should give you thanks, humble our sinful
pride, contribute to the feeding of the poor, and so help
us imitate you in your kindness. And so we glorify you
with countless Angels, as with one voice of praise we
acclaim:
ALL: SONG HOLY

12
Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts
Heaven and earth are full of Your glory
Full of your glory
Hosanna in the highest, hosanna in the highest
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord
Hosanna in the highest, hosanna in the highest
Hosanna in the highest, hosanna in the highest
COMMENTATOR: Please kneel.

EUCHARISTIC PRAYER:

PRIEST: You are indeed Holy, O Lord, the fount of all holiness.
Make holy, therefore, these gifts, we pray, by sending
down your Spirit upon them like the dewfall, so that they
may become for us the Body and Blood of our Lord,
Jesus Christ. At the time he was betrayed and entered
willingly into his Passion, he took bread and, giving
thanks, broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying:
TAKE THIS, ALL OF YOU, AND EAT OF IT, FOR
THIS IS MY BODY, WHICH WILL BE GIVEN UP TO
YOU.

In a similar way, when supper was ended, he took the

chalice and, once more giving thanks, he gave it to his
disciples saying:

13
TAKE THIS, ALL OF YOU, AND DRINK FROM IT,
FOR THIS IS THE CHALICE OF MY BLOOD, THE
BLOOD OF THE NEW AND ETERNAL COVENANT,
WHICH WILL BE POURED OUT FOR YOU AND FOR
MANY FOR THE FORGIVENESS OF SINS. DO THIS
IN MEMORY OF ME.

The mystery of faith.

SONG:
WHEN WE EAT THIS BREAD
When we eat this Bread and drink this Cup,
we proclaim Your Death, O Lord,
until You come again,
until You come again,
we proclaim Your Death, O Lord.

PRIEST: Therefore, as we celebrate the memorial of his Death

and Resurrection, we offer you, Lord, the Bread of life
and the Chalice of salvation, giving thanks that you
have held us worthy to be in your presence and
minister to you.
Humbly we pray that, partaking of the Body and blood
of Christ, we may be gathered into one by the Holy
Spirit.

14
Remember, Lord, your Church, spread throughout the
world, and bring her to the fullness of charity, together
with Francis, our Pope and Gerardo, our Bishop and all
the clergy.
Remember also our brothers and sisters who have
fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection, and all
who have died in your mercy: welcome them into the
light of your face. Have mercy on us all, we pray, that
with the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, with the
blessed Apostles, and all the Saints who have pleased
you throughout the ages, we may merit to be coheirs to
eternal life, and may praise and glorify you through your
Son, Jesus Christ.

Through him, with him and in him, O God almighty

Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor
is yours, for ever and ever.

ALL: (Song) Amen.

PRIEST: At the Savior’s command and formed by divine
teaching, we dare to say:
Commentator: Please all stand.
SONG:
15
OUR FATHER

Our Father, who art in heaven,

Hallowed be thy name,
Thy kingdom come, thy will be done
On earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
And forgive us our trespasses
As we forgive those who trespass against us,
And lead us not into temptation,
But deliver us, deliver us from evil.

PRIEST: Deliver us, Lord, we pray, from every evil, graciously

grant peace in our days, that, by the help of your mercy,
we may be always free from sin and safe from all
distress, as we await the blessed hope and the coming
of our Savior, Jesus Christ.
SONG:
DOXOLOGY TO THE LORD'S PRAYER
ALL: Song - For the kingdom and the power and the glory are
Yours now and forever.

PRIEST: Lord Jesus Christ, who said to your Apostles: Peace I

leave you, my peace I give you, look not on our sins,
but on the faith of your church, and graciously grant her
peace and unity in accordance with your will. Who live
and reign forever and ever.
ALL: Amen.
16
PRIEST: The peace of the Lord be with you always.
ALL: And with your spirit.
PRIEST: Let us offer each other the sign of peace.

SONG:
Lamb of God
Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world,
have mercy, have mercy on us. (2x)
Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world,
Grant us peace, grant us peace.

PRIEST: Behold the Lamb of God, behold him who takes away
the sins of the world. Blessed are those called to the
supper of the Lamb.
ALL: Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my
roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed.
COMMENTATOR: Please be seated.

COMMUNION SONG:
CHRIST IN US OUR HOPE OF GLORY
We felt your word burning within us
Your word unlocked the hardness of our hearts
And opened our eyes that we may see You
Hidden in the broken bread

Lord, You lay down Your life as bread and wine we see
Gave strength to our hearts and made us shine with glee
When we eat the bread and drink your cup of wine
We believe that Christ in us is our hope of glory
17
You brought our ray of light
And You rekindled our hope
And then our hearts to yearn for Your love
For in you is our hope of glory

Lord, You lay down Your life as bread and wine we see
Gave strength to our hearts and made us shine with glee
When we eat the bread and drink the cup of wine
We believe that Christ in us is our hope of glory

Furl your own flesh

Now may be given
And by the spirit
Made life even
You offered life to us
And as your sweat became
Like drops of blood
Falling down upon the ground
You shared Your blood for us
Amen

Lord, You lay down Your life as bread and wine we see
Gave strength to our hearts and made us shine with glee
When we eat the bread and drink the cup of wine
We believe that Christ in us is our hope of glory
We believe that Christ in us is our hope of glory.

TO BE YOUR BREAD

Refrain:
To be your bread now, be your wine now, Lord, come and change us
to be a sign of your love. Blest and broken, poured and flowing, gift
that you gave us, to be your body once again.

1. We come to your table with our lives as they are. Heal us Lord, for
we
18
are broken; make us one again

2. Lord, we stumble through the darkness of night. Lead us, now, O

Lord,
we follow; bring us home to you.

3. Give us the bread and wine that bring us to life. Feed us, and
never hunger, never thirst again.

COMMENTATOR: Please all stand.

PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION

PRIEST: May the Sacrament we have received sustain us, O

Lord, that our Lenten fast may be pleasing to you and

be for us a healing remedy. Through Christ our Lord.

ALL: Amen

Commentator: Please all stand.

CONCLUDING RITE

PRIEST: The Lord be with you.

ALL: And with your spirit.

PRIEST: Bow your heads for God’s blessing.

Pour out a spirit of compunction, O God, on those
who bow before your majesty, and by your mercy
19
may they merit the rewards you promise
to those who do penance. Through Christ our
Lord.

ALL: Amen.
PRIEST: And may the almighty God bless you, the Father,
and the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
ALL: Amen.

RECESSIONAL SONG:
ALAY KAPWA

Di ba't sadyang may kapwa ang sariling

Dapat hainan ng pagsisilbi?
At mamangha: ligaya'y dadalisay,
Pag sa kapwa buhay mo ay naalay.

Bawa't galing gamitin sa paglingap.

Laging damhin kung may naghihirap.
At tandaan: ganyang pagmamahalan,
Unang-unang atas ng kabanalan. (2x)
