ASH WEDNESDAY
The Blessing and Distribution of Ashes
Before Mass shall be blessed ashes made by branches of olive or
other trees blessed in the year foregoing; and the blessing shall be
done in this manner:
The Priest, wearing a violet Cope, or without a Chasuble (the
Sacred Ministers being vested in violet dalmatic and tunicle), shall
go to bless the ashes, which shall be set in a vessel on the epistle
side of the altar. And first the Choir shall sing (or the Priest shall
say) the following antiphon.
THE EXHORTATION
1 3 4
P134
Gospel of our Saviour, and of the need which all
Christians continually have, of a renewal of their
repentance and faith. I therefore invite you, in the
name of the Church, to the observance of a holy Lent,
by self-examination and repentance, by prayer, fasting,
and self-denial, and by reading and meditation upon
God's holy Word.
Here shall be read the following Lesson: Joel 2. 12-18.
1 3 5
P135
4 Against thee only have I sinned, and done that
which is evil in thy sight; / that thou mightest be
justified when thou speakest, and clear when thou
dost judge.
5 Behold, I was brought forth in wickedness, / and
in sin hath my mother conceived me.
6 But lo, thou requirest truth in the inward parts, /
and shalt make me to understand wisdom secretly.
7 Thou shalt purge me with hyssop, and I shall be
clean; / thou shalt wash me, and I shall be whiter than
snow.
8 Thou shalt make me hear of joy and gladness, /
that the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice.
9 Turn thy face from my sins, / and put out all my
misdeeds.
10 Make me a clean heart, O God, / and renew a
right spirit within me.
11 Cast me not away from thy presence, / and take
not thy holy spirit from me.
12 O give me the comfort of thy help again, / and
stablish me with a free spirit.
13 Then shall I teach thy ways unto the wicked, /
and sinners shall be converted unto thee.
14 Deliver me from blood-guiltiness, O God, thou
that art the God of my salvation; / and my tongue shall
sing of thy righteousness.
15 O Lord, open thou my lips, / and my mouth shall
show forth thy praise.
16 For thou desirest no sacrifice, else would I give it;
/ but thou delightest not in burnt offerings.
1 7 The sacrifice of God is a troubled spirit: / a
broken and contrite heart, O God, shalt thou not
despise.
18 O be favourable and gracious unto Sion; / build
thou the walls of Jerusalem.
19 Then shalt thou be pleased with the sacrifices of
righteousness, with the burnt offerings and oblations; /
then shall they offer young bullocks upon thine altar.
1 3 6
P136
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, / and to
the Holy Ghost;

After which the Priest and People shall say, all kneeling:

thy holy Name, who in their consciences by sin are
accused, who in the sight of thy heavenly mercy bewail
their sins, and earnestly and meekly implore thy
gracious loving-kindness. And we beseech thee to
grant to all them that call upon thy holy Name, that
being sprinkled with these ashes for the remission of
their sins, they may be preserved evermore both in
body and soul; through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Let us pray.
1 3 8
P138
Meanwhile the Choir sings the following Antiphons and
Responses.
Another Ant. Ibid. Let the priests, the ministers of the Lord,
weep between the porch and the altar, and let them
say: Spare, O Lord, spare thy people, and shut not up,
O Lord, the mouths of them that praise thee.
Then shall follow this Respond:
Let us pray.

P139
G RANT, we beseech thee, O Lord, that we who
now with prayer and fasting do put upon us the
armour of our Christian warfare, being defended by
the power of abstinence, may fight manfully against all
spiritual wickedness; through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Then shall the Priest, together with the Sacred Ministers, retire to
the Sacristy, where the Priest shall change from violet Cope to
violet Chasuble. When all are ready, the Priest and Sacred Ministers
shall enter the Sanctuary, and the Mass shall begin with the Introit.
AT THE MASS
There are no prayers at the foot of the Altar; the Introit is begun at
once.

ye love them which love you, what reward have ye?
do not even the publicans the same? And if ye salute
your brethren only, what do ye more than others? do

Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to

thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the
hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that

And immediately he talked with them, and saith unto

and they were sore amazed in themselves beyond
measure, and wondered. For they considered not the

And when they had passed over, they came into the

they were come out of the ship, straightway they knew

If I bear witness of myself, my witness is not true.
There is another that beareth witness of me; and I
know that the witness which he witnesseth of me is
true. Ye sent unto John, and he bare witness unto the
truth. But I receive not testimony from man: but these
things I say, that ye might be saved. He was a burning
and a shining light: and ye were willing for a season to
rejoice in his light.
But I have greater witness than that of John: for the
works which the Father hath given me to finish, the
same works that I do, bear witness of me, that the
Father hath sent me.
And the Father himself, which hath sent me, hath
borne witness of me. Ye have neither heard his voice
at any time, nor seen his shape. And ye have not his
word abiding in you: for whom he hath sent, him ye
believe not.
Ye search the scriptures, for in them ye think ye
have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.
And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life. I
receive not honour from men. But I know you, that ye
have not the love of God in you. I am come in my
Father's name, and ye receive me not: if another shall
come in his own name, him ye will receive. How can
ye believe, which receive honour one of another, and
seek not the honour that cometh from God only? Do
not think that I will accuse you to the Father: there is
one that accuseth you, even Moses, in whom ye trust.
For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed
me: for he wrote of me. But if ye believe not his
writings, how shall ye believe my words?

I will arise and go to my father, and will say unto him,
Father, I have sinned against heaven, and before thee,
and am no more worthy to be called thy son: make me
as one of thy hired servants. And he arose, and came
to his father. But when he was yet a great way off, his
father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell
on his neck, and kissed him. And the son said unto
him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in thy
sight, and am no more worthy to be called thy son.
But the father said to his servants, Bring forth the best
robe, and put it on him; and put a ring on his hand,
and shoes on his feet: and bring hither the fatted calf,
and kill it; and let us eat, and be merry: for this my son
was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found.
And they began to be merry.
Now his elder son was in the field: and as he came
and drew nigh to the house, he heard musick and
dancing. And he called one of the servants, and asked
what these things meant. And he said unto him, Thy
brother is come; and thy father hath killed the fatted
calf, because he hath received him safe and sound.
And he was angry, and would not go in: therefore
came his father out, and entreated him. And he
answering said to his father, Lo, these many years do I
serve thee, neither transgressed I at any time thy
commandment: and yet thou never gavest me a kid,
that I might make merry with my friends: but as soon
as this thy son was come, which hath devoured thy
living with harlots, thou hast killed for him the fatted
calf. And he said unto him, Son, thou art ever with
me, and all that I have is thine. It was meet that we
should make merry, and be glad: for this thy brother
was dead, and is alive again; and was lost, and is

his mother, It is a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be
profited by me; and honour not his father or his

commandment of God of none effect by your tradition.
Ye hypocrites, well did Isaiah prophesy of you, saying,
This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth,
and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far
from me. But in vain they do worship me, teaching for
doctrines the commandments of men. And he called
the multitude, and said unto them, Hear, and
understand: Not that which goeth into the mouth
defileth a man; but that which cometh out of the
mouth, this defileth a man. Then came his disciples,
and said unto him, Knowest thou that the Pharisees
were offended, after they heard this saying? But he
answered and said, Every plant, which my heavenly
Father hath not planted, shall be rooted up. Let them
alone: they be blind leaders of the blind. And if the
blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch.
Then answered Peter and said unto him, Declare unto
us this parable. And Jesus said, Are ye also yet
without understanding? Do not ye yet understand,
that whatsoever entereth in at the mouth goeth into
the belly, and is cast out into the draught? But those
things which proceed out of the mouth come forth
from the heart; and they defile the man. For out of the
heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries,
fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies: these
are the things which defile a man: but to eat with
unwashen hands defileth not a man.

Now Moses in the law commanded us, that such

said, tempting him, that they might have to accuse

So when they continued asking him, he lifted up

he stooped down, and wrote on the ground. And they

continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks
to his name. But to do good and to share forget not:
for with such sacrifices God is well pleased.
Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit
yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that
must give account, that they may do it with joy, and
not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you.
Pray for us: for we trust we have a good conscience,
in all things willing to live honestly. But I beseech you
the rather to do this, that I may be restored to you the
sooner.
Now the God of peace, that brought again from the
dead our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep,
through the blood of the everlasting covenant, make
you perfect in every good work to do his will, working
in you that which is well-pleasing in his sight, through
Jesus Christ; to whom be glory for ever and ever.
Amen.

see the works that thou doest. For there is no man that
doeth any thing in secret, and he himself seeketh to be

hate you; but me it hateth, because I testify of it, that
the works thereof are evil. Go ye up unto this feast: I
go not up yet unto this feast; for my time is not yet full

abode still in Galilee. But when his brethren were
gone up, then went he also up unto the feast, not
openly, but as it were in secret. Then the Jews sought
him at the feast, and said, Where is he? And there was
much murmuring among the people concerning him:
for some said, He is a good man: others said, Nay; but
he deceiveth the people. Howbeit no man spake
