ASH WEDNESDAY

Mass Presider: Rev. Fr. Ronilo Javines, SDB

February 22, 2023

INTRODUCTION
Good morning, dear brothers and sisters in Christ!
Guided by the Spirit of the Lord, today we undertake
the journey of a sincere conversion and of rediscovering
the implications of our baptismal commitments in our
daily life.
As we begin the Lenten Season, the call to conversion,
symbolized by the imposition of the ashes, resounds
even louder and clearer. It is a call to penance, to prayer
rooted in faith, to authenticity, to the rejection of any
form of ostentation. This Ash Wednesday should mark
for us a “back to basics,” which will enable us to prepare
ourselves for a lasting sharing in Christ’s Resurrection.
Our mass presider for today is Rev. Fr. Ronilo Javines,
SDB. Let us all stand joyfully and sing our entrance
song.

Entrance Song: ♫ Hosea

GREETINGS
Priest: In the name of the Father, and of the Son,
and of the Holy Spirit.
All: Amen.
Then the Priest, extending his hands, greets the people,
saying:
Priest: Blessed be the Lord who, at the beginning of
this Lenten season, calls us to conversion.
May his grace and peace be with you all!
All: And with your spirit.

OPENING PRAYER
Priest: Let us pray.
Grant, O Lord, that we may begin with holy
fasting this campaign of Christian service, so
that, as we take up battle against spiritual
evils, we may be armed with weapons of
self-restraint.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of
the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever.
All: Amen.

Commentator: Kindly be seated, let us listen

attentively to the Word of God.
LITURGY OF THE WORD
FIRST READING
A proclamation from the book of the Prophet
Joel
“Even now,” says the Lord, “return to me with your
whole heart, with fasting, and weeping, and
mourning. Rend your hearts, not your garments, and
return to the Lord, your God. For gracious and
merciful is he, slow to anger, rich in kindness, and
relenting in punishment. Perhaps he will again
relent and leave behind him a blessing. Offerings
and libations for the Lord, your God!”
Blow the trumpet in Zion! Proclaim a fast, call an
assembly. Gather the people, notify the
congregation; assemble the elders, and gather the
children and the infants at the breast. Let the
bridegroom quit his room, and the bride her
chamber. Between the porch and the altar let the
priests, the ministers of the Lord, weep, and say,
“Spare, O Lord, your people, and make not your
heritage a reproach, with the nations ruling over
them. Why should they say among the peoples,
‘Where is their God?” Then the Lord was stirred to
concern for his land and took pity on his people.
The Word of the Lord
All: Thanks be to God
RESPONSORIAL PSALM

CREATE IN ME A CLEAN HEART PUT A NEW

PUT A NEW AND RIGHT SPIRIT WITHIN ME
CAST ME NOT AWAY FROM YOUR PRESENCE
AND TAKE NOT YOUR HOLY SPIRIT FROM ME

1. Have mercy on me, O God in your goodness

In your compassion blot out all my sins
Thoroughly cleanse me from all of my guilt,
Wash me ‘till I’m whiter than snow. Response.

2. Restore to me the joy of your salvation

Uphold me with a willing spirit so I will teach
transgressors your ways and sinners will return
to you. Response.

3. You are pleased with sincerity of heart

Not with sacrifices or with holocausts
My sacrifice is a broken spirit
For you will not refuse a humble heart.
Response.
SECOND READING
A proclamation from the Second Letter of
Paul to the Corinthians
We are ambassadors for Christ as if God were
appealing through us. We implore you on behalf of
Christ, to be reconciled to God. For our sake he made
him to be sin who did not know sin so that we might
become the righteousness of God in him. Working
together, then, we appeal to you not to receive the
grace of God in vain. For he says, “In an acceptable
time I heard you, and on the day of salvation I
helped you.” Behold, now is a very acceptable time;
behold, now is the day of salvation!

The Word of the Lord

All: Thanks be to God

Commentator: Let us all stand to honor the Holy

Gospel.
GOSPEL ACCLAMATION: ♫GLORY AND
PRAISE
Priest: The Lord be with you.
All: And with your spirit.

Priest: A Reading from the Holy Gospel according

to St. Matthew (Mt. 6:1-6.16-18)
All: Glory to you, O Lord.
Jesus said to his disciples, “Take care not to perform
righteous deeds in order that people may see them;
otherwise, you will have no recompense from your
heavenly Father. When you give alms, do not blow a
trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the
synagogues and in the streets, to win the praise of
others. Amen, I say to you, they have received their
reward. But when you give alms, do not let your left
hand know what your right is doing, so that your
almsgiving may be secret. And your Father, who sees
in secret, will repay you.
When you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, who
love to stand and pray in the synagogues and on
street corners so that others may see them. Amen, I
say to you, they have received their reward. But
when you pray, go to your inner room, close the
door, and pray to your Father in secret. And your
Father, who sees in secret, will repay you.
When you fast, do not look gloomy like the
hypocrites. They neglect their appearance, so that
they may appear to others to be fasting. Amen, I say
to you, they have received their reward. But when
you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, so
that you may not appear to be fasting, except to your
Father who is hidden. And your Father who sees
what is hidden will repay you.”

The Gospel of the Lord!

All: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Commentator: Kindly be seated and let us listen

attentively to the Homily.

HOMILY
Blessing and Giving of Ashes
Priest: Dear brothers and sisters, let us humbly ask
God our Father that he be pleased to bless with the
abundance of his grace these ashes, which we will
put on our heads in penitence.
(Pause for silent prayer.)
O God, who desire not the death of sinners, but their
conversion, mercifully hear our prayers and in your
kindness be pleased to bless (🕆) these ashes, which
we intend to receive upon our heads, that we, who
acknowledge we are but ashes and shall return to
dust, may, through a steadfast observance of Lent,
gain pardon for sins and newness of life after the
likeness of your Risen Son. Who lives and reigns for
ever and ever.
All: Amen!

The priest sprinkles the ashes with holy water in silence.

Then he places ashes on those who come forward, saying
to each:
Repent, and believe in the Gospel. Mk 1:15
Or:
Remember that you are dust, and to dust, you shall return.
Gn 3:1
PRAYERS OF THE FAITHFUL
Priest: As we begin the Lenten Season, let us be
aware of our many moral defects, the violence of
temptation, and our need to be helped by God. Let
us then plead:

GRANT US A NEW HEART, O LORD

1. That the Church may fearlessly preach
conversion to all and lead them by her example. Let
us pray to the Lord.
2. That all our spiritual and civil leaders may
inspire us with their life of humility, honesty, and
dedication. Let us pray to the Lord.
3. That all educators – parents and teachers – may
inculcate in the young the desire to do their duty
with the right intention, and not in order to be
praised. Let us pray to the Lord.
4. That all those who are oppressing others with
their aggressiveness, greed, and heartlessness may
desist from their wrongdoing and learn to respect
and love their neighbor. Let us pray to the Lord.
5. That all of us may begin this Lent with the
proper dispositions of humility, sorrow for our past
sins, and the determination to amend our lives. Let
us pray to the Lord.
6. Let us pray in silence for our personal intentions
and the needs of all the people dear to us. (Pause)
Let us pray to the Lord.
Priest: Lord God, we come to You aware of our
sinfulness and with the sincere desire to be renewed
in heart and mind. May our lives be a constant hymn
of praise to You. Through Christ our Lord.
All: Amen.

Commentator: Please be seated and let us join in

the singing of the offertory song.
Offertory Song: ♫ Paghahandog

LITURGY OF THE EUCHARIST

Priest: Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation,

for through your goodness we have received
the bread we offer you; fruit of the earth and
work of human hands, it will become for us
the bread of life.
Then he places the paten with the bread on the
corporal.

(All: Blessed be God forever.)

The Deacon, or the Priest, pours wine and a little
water into the chalice, saying quietly
By the mystery of this water and wine
may we come to share in the divinity of
Christ who humbled himself to share in our
humanity.

The Priest then takes the chalice and holds it slightly

raised above the altar with both hands, saying in a low
voice:
Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation, for
through your goodness we have received the
wine we offer you: fruit of the vine and work
of human hands, it will become our spiritual
drink.
Then he places the chalice on the corporal.

(All: Blessed be God for ever.)

After this, the Priest, bowing profoundly, says quietly:
With humble spirit and contrite heart
may we be accepted by you, O Lord,
and may our sacrifice in your sight this day
be pleasing to you, Lord God.

Then the Priest, standing at the side of the altar,

washes his hands, saying quietly:
Wash me, O Lord, from my iniquity
and cleanse me from my sin.
Standing at the middle of the altar, facing the people,
extending and then joining his hands, he says:
Priest: Pray, brethren (brothers and sisters), that
my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to
God, the almighty Father.

Commentator: Please all stand.

All: May the Lord accept the sacrifice at

your hands, for the praise and glory of
His name, for our good and the good
of all His Holy Church.
Then the Priest, with hands extended, says the Prayer
over the Offerings.
Priest: As we solemnly offer the annual sacrifice for
the beginning of Lent, we entreat you, O Lord, that,
through works of penance and charity, we may turn
away from harmful pleasures and, cleansed from our
sins, may become worthy to celebrate devoutly the
Passion of your Son. Who lives and reigns for ever
and ever.
All: Amen.

EUCHARISTIC PRAYER
Priest: The Lord be with you.
All: And with your spirit.

Priest: Lift up your hearts.

All: We lift them up to the Lord.

Priest: Let us give thanks to the Lord, our God.

All: It is right and just

Priest:
It is truly right and just, our duty and our
salvation, always and everywhere to give you
thanks, Lord, holy Father, almighty and eternal
God.
For you will that our self-denial should give
you thanks, humble our sinful pride, contribute
to the feeding of the poor and so help us imitate
you in your kindness.
And so we glorify you with countless Angels, as
with one voice of praise we acclaim:

All: ♫Santo (Tinapay ng Buhay/ Francisco)

Commentator: Please remain standing.

CONSECRATION
The Priest, with hands extended, says:
Priest: You are indeed Holy, O Lord, the fount of all
holiness.

He joins his hands and, holding them extended over the

offerings, says:
Make holy, therefore, these gifts, we pray,
by sending down your Spirit upon them like
the dewfall,

He joins his hands and makes the Sign of the Cross

once over the bread and the chalice together, saying:
so that they may become for us the Body and
+ Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ.
He joins his hands.
At the time he was betrayed
and entered willingly into his Passion,

He takes the bread and, holding it slightly raised above

the altar, continues:
he took bread and, giving thanks, broke it,
and gave it to his disciples, saying:

He bows slightly.
TAKE THIS, ALL OF YOU, AND EAT OF IT,
FOR THIS IS MY BODY,
WHICH WILL BE GIVEN UP FOR YOU.

He shows the consecrated host to the people, places it

again on the paten, and genuflects in adoration. After
this, he continues:
In a similar way, when supper was ended,

He takes the chalice and, holding it slightly raised

above the altar, continues:
he took the chalice and, once more giving
thanks, he gave it to his disciples, saying:
He bows slightly.
TAKE THIS, ALL OF YOU, AND DRINK
FROM IT, FOR THIS IS THE CHALICE OF
MY BLOOD, THE BLOOD OF THE NEW
AND ETERNAL COVENANT, WHICH
WILL BE POURED OUT FOR YOU AND
FOR MANY FOR THE FORGIVENESS OF
SINS. DO THIS IN MEMORY OF ME.

He shows the chalice to the people, places it on the

corporal, and genuflects in adoration. Then he says:

Commentator: Please remain standing.

Priest: The mystery of faith.

to the world, free me by this, your most holy
Body and Blood, from all my sins and from
every evil; keep me always faithful to your

while facing the people, says aloud:

Behold him who takes away the sins of the
world.
Blessed are those called to supper of the
Lamb.
