PANLIPUNAN THROUGH THE USE OF DIORAMA AS AN INSTRUCTIONAL
MATERIALS IN ASIAN STUDIES OF GRADE 7 IN LIGAO NATIONAL HIGH
SCHOOL: AN ACTION RESEARCH STUDY

Organes, Jonel S.

I. CONTEXT AND RATIONAL

The use of innovative instructional materials can significantly enhance the learning
experience in Araling Panlipunan. These materials, which can include digital resources,
interactive activities, and multimedia presentations, can make the subject more
engaging and relatable for students. They can help to bring the subject to life, making it
easier for students to understand and retain the information.

In the Philippines, Araling Panlipunan (Social Studies) is a crucial subject that aims
to promote contextualizing and localizing assessments, allowing students to apply what
they have learned in the actual world (Navalta, 2021). Through Araling Panlipunan,
pupils grow in their understanding of knowledge of the world, including other cultures
and their worth in various eras, locations, and circumstances. Additionally, they develop
a perspective on their surroundings and how it is developing (Lao-at, 2019). Araling
Panlipunan (AP) is our backdoor to the past, our current course in the present, and our
front door to the future.

Several characteristics, including interests, favorable psychological aspects,

motivation, attitudes, discipline, and others, are necessary to produce positive learning
results (Herpratiwi & Ahmad, 2022). Despite being an interesting subject, the literature
reveals that students exhibit a lack of interest in Araling Panlipunan, resulting in
misbehavior during class discussions, a lack of motivation to learn, and failure to
complete the subject's tasks (Cosme, 2019). Moreover, existing pedagogies have failed
to address this problem, resulting in ineffective teaching and learning practices in the
subject. Thus, there is a need to develop appropriate pedagogies that should be
creatively implemented to maximize opportunities and meet demands of the 21st-
century effective learning. A deep grasp of how kids learn, particularly in Araling
Panlipunan, will always be the foundation of effective teaching tactics (Javina et al.,
2019).

The use of Diorama as an instructional material in Asian History in Araling

Panlipunan can enhance student engagement and learning by making the subject more
engaging, relatable, and inclusive. This approach aligns with the current trend towards
more personalized and student-centered learning, and it has the potential to significantly
improve educational outcomes in the Philippines. This approach can help to ensure that
all students have the opportunity to succeed in Araling Panlipunan, which can ultimately
lead to improved teaching and learning practices in the subject.

The purpose of the study is to evaluate how well Araling Panlipunan 7 (Asian
Studies) is being taught using dioramas. In order to do that, the researchers will observe
how grade 7 Jpr1 students learn, and in order to get the intended outcome, they will
compare the performance of the students before and after which comprises Diorama
into their class discussion on the relevant topic. The outcome will demonstrate how the
inclusion of diorama in Araling Panlipunan 7 (Asian Studies) improves grade 7 JPR1
students' enhancement, engagement and learning.

II. ACTION RESEARCH QUESTIONS

The study aims to enhance student engagement and learning in Araling

Panlipunan through the use of innovative instruction materials.

Specifically, it seeks to answer the following questions:

1. How does the integration of dioramas as an instructional material in Asian
studies lessons in grade 7 impact students engagement levels in Araling
Panlipunan classes?
2. What role does the use of dioramas play in enhancing students
understanding and retention of Asian Studies concepts within the context
of Araling Panlipunan?
3. Are there significant differences in learning outcomes and enthusiasm for
Araling Panlipunan when it comes from traditional to innovative
instructional materials in teaching methods in the context of Asian
Studies?

III. PROPOSED INNOVATION, INTERVENTION, AND STRATEGY

The researchers conducted a field study and interviewed an Araling

Panlipunan teacher, uncovering concerns about students' academic progress.
The introduction of the Grade 7, designed to accommodate diverse learning
styles, prompted a closer examination of its effectiveness. The teacher's insights
provided valuable information about the challenges within the Araling Panlipunan
curriculum. The evidence suggests that traditional teaching methods may not be
universally effective, emphasizing the need for a nuanced approach to cater to
students' varied needs. This observation prompted a thorough exploration of
specific areas of difficulty and the consideration of targeted interventions to
optimize the learning experience. Consequently, a comprehensive understanding
of the challenges faced by Grade 7 students in Araling Panlipunan was obtained,
leading to the development of customized strategies that foster improved
learning outcomes within this unique educational framework.

To address these challenges, the researchers proposed a visual-based

teaching method called Diorama, which involves incorporating a representation
of an event happened in the past or artifacts into the learning process. Diorama
is a versatile educational approach that caters to multiple intelligences. It
provides a hands-on experience for students with spatial intelligence, enhances
comprehension for visual learners through concrete representations, fosters a
deeper understanding for auditory learners through discussions and descriptions,
and promotes experiential learning for kinesthetic learners through active
interaction with the objects. Essentially, Diorama act as a dynamic instrument
that engages multiple intelligence, creating a well-rounded and inclusive
atmosphere for learning.

IV. ACTION RESEARCH METHODS

A. Participants and/or other sources of data and information

Ligao National High School has 50 students in total, 28 of them are male
while 22 of them are female. This research will determine the potential impact of
Diorama integration in teaching Araling Panlipunan.

The researcher's observation of the Grade 7 JPR 1 class, the instructor's

assessment, and the interview with the Araling Panlipunan teacher are additional
sources of information. Whether or not they have improved in their performance
and retention of the lesson in Araling Panlipunan 7, it will be determined by the
results of the evaluation test. Without the use of a diorama, an assessment test
will be used to create the students' scores in order to judge how well they
performed in the World History topic. Students' satisfaction with using of the
diorama in their Araling Panlipunan lesson will be ascertained through the use of
a structured survey questionnaire. Students in JPR 1 in grade 7 will be the
treatment group for this study.

B. Data Gathering Methods

The head of the school must grant permission for the researcher to carry
out the study. The study will commence with the researcher sending a request
letter to the LNHS school principal. This study will aim to determine the
usefulness of using Diorama, a type of visual learning resource, for the grade 7
JPR1 was assessed by the researcher using a series of survey questionnaires.
Since the study has one focused group, a type of quasi-experimental research
methodology is also employed. The purpose of the survey questions was to
determine whether the flexible integration of diorama with the 7th grade Araling
Panlipunan class resulted in a change in the learning process.
Due to the single target group nature of this study, the primary data will be
obtained following the implementation of the intervention through a series of
evaluations, such as diagnostic exams.
Since just one target group is included in this study, the intervention will
take place over the course of a few consecutive days, with the first teaching and
learning process taking place either conventionally or without the intervention.
The application of integrating diorama into the teaching and learning process will
begin the next day. To ascertain whether using Diorama to teach Araling
Panlipunan in the seventh grade is beneficial, the outcomes of the diagnostic
tests as well as the checklist or survey questionnaire will be analyzed.

C. Data Analysis Plan

The goal of this study is to determine the effectiveness of integrating

Diorama in teaching Araling Panlipunan in Grade 7.

The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of using

diorama integration in teaching and learning AP. The researchers gathered
data from pre and post implementation of the intervention, that consist of
student’s performance with and without the intervention.

The nature of this study is qualitative, and the only methods for
evaluating the findings will be observation and examination of the research
tool. Additionally, descriptive statistics will be employed to examine the study
inquiries.
