LESSON 1: Number and Number Sense

At the end of this lesson, you are expected to:
 solve multi-step routine and non-routine
word problems involving multiplication and
addition or subtraction using appropriate
problem-solving strategies and tools.

INTRODUCTION
Problem Solving is a process that needs one or more operation by
which we discover things and ways, what we really don’t know. It involves
several strategies in which require some degree of imagination and innovation to
arrive at satisfactory solutions. Mostly, these problems have its hidden
statement/questions which can be solved in multiple ways. By overcoming all
these challenges, you develop dependency and acquire the problem-solving
skills and techniques.
There are techniques and method on how to solve multi-step routine
and non-routine problems involving multiplication, and addition or subtraction
using appropriate problem-solving strategies and tools.

What’s New

Mrs. Tuscano, a fruit dealer has 35 crates of mangoes in her delivery truck.
Each crate has 100 mangoes. She delivered 15 crates to Jerry’s Fruit Store,
15 crates to Mark’s Fresh Fruit Stall and sold the rest in the market. How
many fruits were sold in the market?

LESSON PROPER
DISCUSSION 1
In this lesson, these are the steps in solving routine and non-routine multi-step
word problem:

Let us analyze the word problem:

1. What is asked? The number of fruits sold in the market.
2. What are the given facts? 35 crates, 100 mangoes per crate, 15 and 15
crates
3. What operation/s will be used to solve the problem? Addition, subtraction
and multiplication
4. What is the hidden information? Number of crates of mangoes delivered.
5. What is the number sentence for the hidden question? 15 + 15 = 30
crates
6. What is the number sentence for the problem?
a. 35 – (15 + 15 ) X 100 = N, 35-30 = 5, 5 X 100 = 500
7. What is the final answer? 500 pieces of mangoes were sold in the market

INDEPENDENT ACTIVITY 1

A. Analyze the word problem then solve. Write your answer on the space
provided.

What’s New

Now, let’s take a look on this:

Some Commonly Used Strategies in Problem Solving
1. Drawing a Diagram – Representing a problem by means of a figure, a
diagram or a sketch can help in visualizing the problem. It really helps solidify
concrete thinking. It is useful with problems that involve mapping, geometry,
and graphing.
2. Trial and Error or Guess and Check – Involves guessing, checking,
guessing again, checking again, repeating the process until the correct
answer is arrived at.
3. Making a List – Involves making an organized list of possible answers. It
can also quickly eliminate possibilities that do not solve the problem.
4. Looking for a Pattern – Involves making tentative generalizations on the
basis of examples.
5. Making a Table – Involves organizing the data of a problem in an
organized chart or table. It can be used with other strategies such as guess
and check and looking for a pattern.
6. Working Backward – Involves starting at the end result and working
backwards to an initial condition, in order to figure out the answer to the
problem.
7. Writing an Equation – Involves representing the unknown by means of a
letter or a variable and then making an equation.

INDEPENDENT ACTIVITY 2

A. Analyze the word problem below. (Hint: Use Some Commonly Used
Strategies in Problem Solving.) Write your answer on the space provided.

1. There are 7 guests in a room. If each shakes hand once with everyone,
how many handshakes are there?

2. Nica helps her father sell fruits in their stalls in a certain market last
Saturday. They sold 100 kilograms of mangoes at PhP 120 per kilo. They
also sold 75 kilograms of bananas at PhP 70 per kilo. How much is the
sale of their fruit stalls during that day?

3. Wilson has some pigs and chickens in his backyard. All in all there are 15
heads and 42 legs. How many pigs and how many chickens are there?

4. I am a 4-digit even number. My hundreds digit is 4. The sum of my ones

and tens is equal to my hundreds digit. My thousands digit is 3 more than
my hundreds digit. What numbers can I be?

5. The letters BCDE, can be put into a different order: DCBE or BEDC. How
many different combinations of the letters ABCD can you make?

B. Analyze and answer the questions that follow.

There were 30 girl scouts and 35 boy scouts who joined the tree planting
project of the school. If each scout planted 3 trees, how many trees were
planted altogether?
