Introductory
The architectural concept is the idea that guides spatial creation and according to which a design is
elaborated, and at the same time it offers the key to adequately comprehending the work as ultimately
realized.

Introductory
In architecture, a design concept is what the designer feels and thinks of when they connect to their design. It is
what the user or visitor moving through the finished structure and spaces feels, thinks and experiences on their
journey.

What is a concept?
A concept is an idea, a theory or notion, but in
architecture we could also describe a concept
as ‘an approach’ to the design.
When we think of architectural concepts, we
think of an abstract idea, one that is unchanging
throughout the design process. This is not
necessarily the case, a concept can be linked to
many factors, and can evolve as the design
grows.

Where Does A
Concept Come From?
1. A concept arises from one or more of the design factors. We
spend time researching, documenting and understanding
the site, typology, users, brief and programme.
2. We document existing site conditions and start to analyse
these look for patterns, connections and relationships at the
mega, macro and micro scales.
3. We look to precedent of similar typologies to understand
best practice, what works and what does not.
4. We analyse the programme and again start to find
functional relationships and patterns.
5. We interrogate the brief to find a project vision and
aspirations.
6. We interview users to fully understand their needs, wants and
desires.
7. We consider possible materials and technology that may be
relevant or excluded.

Architecture
Elements of Architecture focuses on the fragments of the
rich and complex architectural collage.

Form Making and Concept
Form can be described as a reference to both the internal structure and external outline, often in the
shape of a three dimensional mass or volume.

Primary elements
The primary elements of form are points, lines,
planes and volumes – each one growing from
the other. A point is a position in space, a line is
the extension of a point. A surface or plan, is the
extension of a line. A volume is a plane
extended.

Basic Form and
Transformation of
Form
Many variations of a form can be generated
from the primary solids, by manipulating
dimensions of the solids, or adding or subtracting
elements.
