Design Drawing
Even with all the digital tools available to us, we still hand sketch every day to communicate our
ideas and I think sketching is still the most fundamental skill every designer should try to
develop. This hand-sketched (of course), beautifully illustrated book is a classic guide that
walks you through sketching at every step of the architectural process.

101 Things I Learned in Architecture School

I got this book after I graduated architecture school, but still found it immensely valuable. This is
a concise and straight forward book that explains everything from design to presentation
techniques. It explains rules of design in an objective, matter-of-fact way, and I have found it
incredibly refreshing to see a book like this in a subjective, opinion based world that is design. I

Thomas Heatherwick: Making

I read this book at a particularly low point in my architectural career, and it rekindled my love
and excitement for architecture. I don't think I fully appreciated the genius behind
Heatherwick's work until reading this book. They try to answer seemingly simple questions and
reading about their processes, the trials / errors / successes was so intriguing and inspiring.

Manual of Section
We're taught that plan is the generator of the design, but I always start thinking in sections as
early as possible. This book illustrates the sections of well known buildings, sometimes
revealing qualities about the buildings you hadn't seen before.

The Hidden Dimension

Not exactly an architecture book, but it's a very interesting read about the invisible boundaries
between people. It talks about the science behind how a person's use of space can affect their
psychology and interactions with others, and how it can inform urban planning and architecture.

The Eyes of the Skin: Architecture and the Senses

I was first introduced to this book in the first year of architecture school, and it kind of blew my
mind. Our culture fixates on the eyes, and neglects other important haptic ways of experiencing
the world, like touch, smell, or sound. This beautifully written, poetic book shows us how our
senses help us navigate our world and how we can think about designing for the senses.

I actually made a short video about some of the concepts discussed in the book, if you want to
check it out:

Thinking Architecture, 3rd Edition

Many people look to Zumthor for his material and tectonic execution, but what I found most
surprising reading this book is his deep care and concern for the phenomenological
experience of the user. I really felt the humility of an architectural giant and if you're interested in
creating kinder, more ethical and more responsible architecture, I would highly recommend this
book.

If you're interested, I made a videoFor Creators

BIG is the master of communication. Not only do they push the boundaries with their
architectural concepts, but their communication style always goes above and beyond, to
deliver the message powerfully and clearly, and is worth observing for that simple fact. Fun and
