Analyzing Architecture
Defining Modern Architecture
Duration: 1 weeks
Semester weightage: 5%
“Architecture should speak for its time and
place, but yearn for timelessness” Frank Gehry
Project Brief
The goal of this project is to investigate history on some of the pivotal events that have
shaped our understanding and approach to architecture. Emphasis of discussion will be
primarily on buildings and works of individual architects. Canonical architects,
buildings and movements that have exerted significant influences on the development
of architecture will be studied in detail. As a final project, each student will analyze a
building through drawings, text, bibliography and a physical model in a format ready
for documentation and exhibition.

Project Deliverables
Architecture plays a major role in defining an urban fabric of a city that dictates the
characteristics of a space, standard of living and a holistic perception towards it. It has
an impact to bring the cultural, social and economic difference in the society.
You are all required to pick an Architect from the list above and do a comprehensive
analysis on the allotted case study. You also need to understand the buildings and its
immediate surroundings in detail to have a seamless idea about its form, space and
materiality. Understand the conceptualization and as to how it is driven and translated
into a form and an inhabitable space. Learn about its research approach and design
methodologies.

You are required to translate the robust analysis into handmade sketches and drawings.
(No computer generated drawings allowed). Documentation also includes
reconstructed key plans, sections, elevations and a physical model of a manageable
scale from your research.
Finally, submit one 20 x 30 panel containing the following:
• Building introduction and concept
• Detailed diagrammatic analysis
• Reconstruction of Plans, sections, elevation, axonometric studies
• Materiality
