This not an actual lesson plan – just a guide to what the teacher does in a typical PPP lesson.
NB – timings are not invariable. You would adapt according to what you want to do. You need to build in a little flexibility in case an activity takes more or
less time than you expected.

Warmer 5-10 A fun interactive activity, usually related to the rest of the
lesson in some way.
Typically introduces the topic to be used as the context in
the presentation.
Presentation 10-15 Teacher introduces the target language in a suitable context.
Using elicitation, the meaning, form and pronunciation are
examined.
Concept questions are used to check students' understanding

Teacher Activity Student Activity
Controlled 10-15 Activities focusing on accuracy: the aim is to help students
Practice get pronunciation and form right.
Usually starts with drilling, then moves on to exercises such
as writing the correct form in gapped sentences, very
controlled short dialogues, etc.
Teacher corrects or encourages self-correction when
mistakes are made.
Freer Practice 15 Here the teacher gives students one or more activities
(Production) focusing on fluency.
These activities involve using the target language to
communicate (e.g., a role play, a discussion, a
communicative game).
It is usually a speaking activity, but sometimes involves
writing.
The teacher does not correct at this stage, but monitors and
notes errors.
Plenary/Close 5 Teacher draws together what has been covered in the lesson.
This may include a correction spot looking at errors picked
up in the previous stage.
The teacher may set homework or a preparation task for the
next lesson.
