History of The Philippine Islands
1.) Based on your critical analysis of the above description of Antonio de Morga about
the early inhabitants of the then called Philippine islands, draw some points which
you do not agree about the Filipino people before the Spanish colonization. Provide
evidence of your argument.
Knowing that historians only relied on the small recorded history about the past of our country, I
think it is fine to think that most of their work is modified or inaccurate. We fail to understand that
those we call historians try to insert illogical facts in our brains about our recorded history to
make the colonizers appear beneficial. Since our history started years prior to the arrival of the
Spaniards, it is safe to say that our ancestors are the ones who know our own history and origin.
In the excerpt I have read, it was stated that the barbarians have little capacity where they don't
have a fixed house or settlements and they chose to wander through the mountains. It was also
stated that they are much given into killings. However, in this period, the Filipinos were already
much more advanced than what is described since they already have laws and governments
which makes them civilized. A resource I found (Philippine Consulate General, 2021) stated that
before Spanish colonization in 1521, the Filipinos already had a rich culture where trading with
the Chinese and Japanese were already present. In addition to this, it was stated in the excerpt
that the natives don’t have knowledge of the true God or they have many fixed beliefs. The way
it was explained that Filipinos don’t have any religion was already describing how religion was
practiced by them. According to Miller, J., 20201, the Filipino pre-hispanic belief system was
composed of a pantheon of gods, spirits, trees, mountains, etc. This simply means that they
already had some beliefs about Gods before the arrival of the Spaniards.
2.) Do you think some of the observed characteristics of culture and practices of the
early Filipinos still exist nowadays? Give examples, if there is. Justify if there is none.
