Measuring and Its Application
Introduction
In the previous modules, you have learned about the
different tools used in measuring objects. You were able to explain how
these tools are being used. You also did some exercises that helped you
to expand your understanding about these tools and how these become
useful in the field of Science and Research.
In this module, we will try to practice using those tools
mentioned in the previous module. We will perform some exercises that
would help us apply what we have learned about the use of measuring
tools. Moreover, we will be determining the importance of accuracy and
precision in doing measurements. Understanding this concept will help
you explain why measurement is an essential skill in the field of
research.

2. emphasize the importance of accuracy and precision in doing

In the previous activity, you were able to measure
different objects found at home with the use of a ruler. Though,
in measuring large objects, such as the door, a ruler is not
always advisable to use. There are other measuring tools that
are more appropriate to use and one example of this is the
meterstick. A ruler would be more appropriate to use when
measuring smaller objects. In other words, there is a specific
measuring tool appropriate for each object to be used in
measuring.
Let’s examine now, what other tools can be used to
measure other objects. We’ll find out in the next activity

Do you know how accuracy and precision are related to
measurements? There are two words to remember when doing
measurements – accuracy and precision. Accuracy depends on the
nature of the instrument and the way it is used. Precision is the
agreement among observed values in repeated measurements.
A measurement is accurate if it is very close to the actual value.
Only one value is needed to determine the accuracy of a measurement.
Measurements are precise if the values for the different trials are very
close to each other. At least two measurements are needed to determine
the precision of a measurement.
Activity 3
BE ACCURATE AND PRECISE
In order for you to fully understand the relation of accuracy
and precision to measurement, do the simple activity below.
What To Do
Take a box (any box will do). Estimate its length, width and
height.
Write your estimate in your notebook. Include the unit of
measurement.
Measure its length, width and height. Record your
measurements in your notebook.
Do this by accomplishing Table 3.

Take time to understand the following ideas or concepts
for you to confirm the results of the activities you have performed.
When you measure the length of your notebook using a ruler,
you actually compare your notebook to a measurement standard
which is the ruler. Two systems of measurement are usually used in
a ruler: the English system and the Metric system. The unit of length

in the English system that is used in a ruler is the inch (in); in the metric system, it is
the centimeter (cm). The meter (m) is the SI unit of length. The distance from a
doorknob to the floor is about one meter. A meterstick and a metric ruler are used to
measure length.(Felicerta, et. al., Measurement, 24).
Volume is the amount of space an object occupies. It
is a derived quantity. There are different ways of measuring
volume such as using a graduated cylinder, using linear
measurements, and using the water displacement method.
To find the volume of an object with regular shape, measure
its dimensions (the length, width, and thickness or height)
and use the formula Image by Talkwalker
V= l x w x h.
If the three dimensions are in centimeters, the volume of an
object will be in cubic centimeters (cm)3. For a larger object, the
measurements can be in meters; thus, the volume will be in cubic
meters (m3).
To find the volume of an object with irregular shape, use the
water displacement method. For example, you want to find the
volume of a stone. Measure the given volume of water in a

cylinder with water. Measure the increase in the level of water.
Subtract the original volume from the volume of water
with the stone.
Mass is the amount of matter in an object. The
unit of mass is the kilogram (kg). It can be measured
using a platform balance or a triple beam
balance.(Felicerta, et. al., Measurement, 26-28).

Accuracy represents how close a measurement comes to its true values. For
example, the mass of a pack of spaghetti as indicated in the label is 450g. Using a
balance, you measured the mass of the spaghetti three times and got the following
results; 449g, 451g, and 450g. The average mass is 450g. Because the average
mass you got from your measurement is the same as what is indicated in the label,
your measurement is accurate.
Precision is the closeness of the measurements to each other. For example,
Francheska, Louise, and Dax measured the length of a table. Francheska measured
the table to be 1.350 m long; Louise, 1.351 m long; and Dax, 1.349 m long. The
average of the three measurements is 1.35 m. Because the measurements are close
to this value, the measurements are considered precise. (Felicerta, et. al.
Measurement, 32).

Answer to Question
Accuracy is important because non-functional equipment, poor data
processing or human error can lead to inaccurate results that are not very close to
the truth. Precision in measurement is important in order to ensure we are getting the
correct results.
