Introductory Message
Welcome to Research 1

The Learning Activity Sheet is a product of the collaborative efforts of the

Schools Division of Roxas City and DepEd Regional Office VI - Western Visayas through
the Curriculum and Learning Management Division (CLMD). This is developed to guide
the learning facilitators (teachers, parents, and responsible adults) in helping the learners
meet the standards set by the K to 12 Basic Education Curriculum.

The Learning Activity Sheet is self-directed instructional materials aimed to

guide the learners in accomplishing activities at their own pace and time using the
contextualized resources in the community. This will also assist the learners in acquiring
the lifelong learning skills, knowledge and attitudes for productivity and employment.

For learning facilitator:

The Research 1 Activity Sheet will help you facilitate the teaching-learning
activities specified in each Most Essential Learning Competency (MELC) with minimal or
no face-to-face encounter between you and learner. This will be made available to the
learners with the references/links to ease the independent learning.

For the learner:

The Research 1 Activity Sheet is developed to help you continue learning even
if you are not in school. This learning material provides you with meaningful and engaging
activities for independent learning. Being an active learner, carefully read and understand
the instructions then perform the activities and answer the assessments. This will be
returned to your facilitator on the agreed schedule.

Analyze and Interpret Data

I. Learning Competency with Code

Analyze or examine data, make necessary interpretations, and determine the

truthfulness of hypothesis based on given sets of data. (SSP_RS7-IPS-III-q-r21)

II. Background Information for Learners

Gathering data in an investigation is an important scientific process to collect

pieces of evidence that one needs to support his/her formulated hypothesis. Data are
information collected through experimentation that are usually in numerical form
gathered using a series of observations and inferences. These are what the scientists
analyze and interpret to find answers to their questions.

Interpreting data is an integrated skill that requires the application of other basic
process skills-specifically inferring, predicting, classifying and communicating. It is
through this complex process that the usefulness of data is determined in answering the
question being investigated. Interpretations are always subject to revision in the light of
new or more refined data.

The sequence of interpreting data is:

a. Select data pertinent to the question asked.
b. Process raw data to explain trends or relationships.
c. Describe information as it is displayed on tables or graphs.
d. Make and explain inferences from tables or graphs.
e. Set criteria for assessing the validity, precision, and usefulness of data
f. Compare sets of related data to test the credibility of inferences and
generalizations.
g. Select the most acceptable interpretation from multiple interpretations of the
same set of data.
h. State criteria for restricting inferences and generalizations to those inferences
and generalizations supported by data.

III. Activity Proper

Activity 1: Experiment Time!

Directions: Conduct the following experiment to be able to gather, examine and interpret
data and determine the truthfulness of the given hypothesis.

Statement of the Problem

• How does sunlight affect the growth of plants?

Hypothesis

• The light from the sun affects the growth of plants.

Materials

• two identical seed boxes (or any identical containers)

• humus (or any healthy soil)
• plant seeds (any seed that is available in your home that is easy to grow like
monggo, tomato, beans, etc.)
• black cloth

Gathering of Data

1. Prepare the materials.

2. Put equal amount of soil in the two seed boxes or containers that you have. Label
them Seed Box A and Seed Box B.
3. Place equal number of seeds at various intervals in each seed box or container.
10 to 20 seeds will do depending on the size of your seed box or container.
4. Water each seed box or container equally and regularly.
5. Place the two seed boxes or containers in a secure place in your backyard.
6. Cover Seed Box B with a black cloth (make sure the cloth is not touching the soil).
Just let Seed Box A open.
7. Observe the two seed boxes or containers every morning for 10 days by counting
the number of sprouts in each seed box daily.
8. Record your data and observations.
9. You may take a picture of the two seed boxes daily from Day 1 to Day 10 (if you
have an available gadget).
10. Answer the guide questions.

2
Analyzing and Presenting the Data

Record your data in the following table:

Seed box Number of sprouts

Day Day Day Day Day Day Day Day Day Day 10
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9

Guide Questions:
1. Which seed box /container has a greater number of sprouts after 10 days?
_______________________________________________________________
2. Which seed box/container has a smaller number of sprouts after 10 days?
________________________________________________________________
3. What factor affects the difference in the number of sprouts in Seed Box A and
Seed Box B?
________________________________________________________________

4. How would you interpret the gathered data based on the table?
________________________________________________________________
5. In what other ways can you present your data?
________________________________________________________________
6. Do the results of the experiment support your hypothesis? Explain your answer.
________________________________________________________________
7. What conclusion can you make out of the result of your experiment?
________________________________________________________________
