INTRODUCTION
As time goes by, the design trend of architecture has changed several times
since WWI. The architectural design method has changed from simple to
complex, from complex back to simple. Changes have occurred not only in
form but also in material.
In many countries, people must live in a limited space, with the space
usually muti-functional and containing diverse architectural elements. To
save building costs and space architects may use various methods to design
houses or apartments.
Constrained by limited building construction budgets and the physical area
of the sites, architects must strive to design houses to satisfy building codes
as well as clients’ expectations. In addition, since more people live in very
large cities or in limited spaces, the trend for architects to design buildings
with consideration of the different ways to reduce cost while increasing
efficiency of space usage.
International apartment building
case study
Le Copenhague Apartments
Le Copenhague Apartments / Christophe Rousselle is found in Montreuil
France. The architect of this apartment building is Chritophe Rousselle.
This residential project, located on the outskirts of Paris, emerges as a
single, sober volume with simple shapes that oscillate between
massiveness and transparency due to the alternation between concrete
and glass.
The building is configured as a large
solid body of almost white concrete,
which contains 21 apartments
distributed over 6 stories and which
is inserted in a commercial plinth that
tries to disappear through its glazed
facade. The solid parts of this plinth
are conceived in a dark tone that
suppresses this level and provides a
shadow in which the rest of the
building is supported, giving lightness
to the main volume.
Each facade was carefully thought
out, and they provide two different
ways of approaching the public space.
On one hand, one is conceived as a
game of subtractions as you level up,
producing generous outdoor spaces
for the upper-story apartments. On the contrary, the other is thought of
as a smooth element that is randomly interrupted by the different
glazed openings. These two ways of facing the street, fit harmoniously
into a single coherent body thanks to the mono materialism of the
volume.
The use of raw concrete has been chosen for being a unifying element -
sober and elegant -, for its robust and durable quality, as well as for its
structural advantage when creating outdoor spaces that are a real
attraction and that favor a long-term qualitative use. The polished finish,
very similar to metal, was achieved through the use of a very smooth
metal form work and a light gray tint which is finished with a satin clear
coat.

LOCAL CASE STUDY on APARTMENT
BUILDING/condominium
A condominium is a large property complex comprised of individual
units, where each unit is owned separately.
Gende Gara Conominum
Gende Gara condominum is located in Adama Town around Gende Gara
Holyrinity church.
On this building the ground floor is used for commercial purposes.
There are beauty salon, shops, mini super markets, pharmacy, and bar.
The other four stories are used for residential for peoples.
The site
The site is highly exposed to the sun light and the prevailing wind
coming from the NW side. The cause for the high speed wind is thought
to be the Adama wind power plan which is located in NW direction of
the building. On the building the residents used paints and curtains to
cover the windows’ glass which would prevent the harsh sun in some
amount.
The place where this condominium is located has a easy access for
transportation since it has been built on the road side. In fact, the
building’s for fits its function, which is residence.
Circulation
As circulation there is a stair at the central axis of the building, which
makes it easily accessible. As a horizontal circulation there are collidors
in each floor.
Parking
The building doesn’t have its own parking. The residents of the building
uses the road side or the compound of the building as parking.
