Architects: The Organic Layout

ABOUT SITE & LOCATION:-
CITY:- RAJASTHAN, INDIA
CLIENT:- SHREE CEMENT LTD.
CLIMATE:-HOT ARID CLIMATE
COMPLETION DATE:- 12/2015
GROSS FLOOR AREA (m.sq.):- 4,900
ABOUT SITE & LOCATION:-

• Studios 18, are eighteen

residential apartments located
on an undulating site in the
deserts of Ras, Rajasthan, India.

• These apartments are spread out,

over an area of 36 acres.

• The layout is influenced by

the organic structure of the
neighbouring villages with
 interspersed residential units,
connected with streets, branched
out from the main road, leading
towards the parking lot, in the site.

SITE PLAN
CONCEPT:-

• The layout of these 3-levelled residential apartments represents

the organic nature of ancient Indian cities that pushes the residences back,
connecting them with adjoining corridors throughout.

• The 4m contour level difference is handled to maximum benefit with a

gradual step down in building levels with the contours.
ORGANIC VILLAGE LAYOUT
• The architect has been empathetic towards the hot arid climate prevailing
throughout the location with temperatures rising over 35°C during the 8-months
of summer.

• Hence, keeping the orientation of low-rise apartments,

either towards the north or the northeast or the northwest
with none facing the south.

differences of 3 to 8 meters
FEATURES & USAGE INDEX OF VARIOUS SPACES:-
SQUARE PUNCTURES

• The interconnected circulation spaces are naturally

ventilated with an abstract composition of square punctures
within walls on either side, facilitating air movement. SQUARE PUNCTURES

LINEAR CORRIDORS

• The direct heat of the Sun is obstructed, allowing natural

daylight within the linear corridors through these square
openings creating interesting patterns during different times
of the day.
• The linear corridors create an engaging experience by LINEAR CORRIDORS
interconnecting the apartments and providing a well-
ventilated, covered walkway giving the residents a peek at
the surrounding landscaped spaces on the site.

RECESSED WINDOWS

• Even the apartments are cross-ventilated by deeply recessed

windows and open to sky terraces.

FUNCTIONING OF FACADE
Colour plays a crucial role in the design. The inspiration for
colour-coding different volumes of spaces, in the design, is
taken from the State where the site is, i.e., Rajasthan.
Rajasthan is one of the most colourful states in India. Not only
do the natives wear bright coloured attires with shining
jewellery, but also the cities are colour-coded.

Udaipur is known as The White City, as it is home to

innumerable lakes and structures with marble architecture.

Jodhpur is known as the blue city, as the homes of natives are in

hues of blue lime plaster.

Jaipur, known as the pink city, as the buildings here, are painted
with terracotta pink; and

Jaisalmer is known as the golden city, due to the houses built in

yellow sandstone and also because of the Thar desert, which
appears in the hues of gold, brown and yellow.
Colours, used in the design, add merit to the visual impact. The deconstructed cubes sport varied hues of the sandy
region, at different times of the day – visually differentiating the stepped, recessed volumes, as well as identifying
circulation spaces. With lighter hues on external walls to reflect heat off the surfaces and darker tones indoors to
create a cooling feel, they add impact to the highly ‘responsive’ design solution.

Sustainable by its design, complies with the site contours, and

orients in a way, to reduce heat gain, facilitating natural light
and ventilation.

ZAHA HADID ARCHITECT
ABOUT SITE & LOCATION
LOCATION :- Monterrey ,MEXICO
PROJECT TYPE :- Multifamily ,Planning
CLIMATE :- sub-tropical
SIZE :- 137,000 sq. meters (33.85 acre)
ARCHITECT’S OBJECTIVES AND CONCEPT OF DESIGN
zaha hadid architects has presented
plans for their first work in mexico,
a high-density housing project in monterrey. the brief
originally called for 12 residential towers, but the London-based
practice proposed an alternative low-rise design with 981 units
arranged around three sides of the rectangular site
ARCHITECT’S OBJECTIVES AND CONCEPT OF DESIGN
The design responds to its location in the Huajuco Canyon
by arranging apartments to reduce solar loads and capture the
prevailing winds and cool the buildings' interiors. In addition,
the facade of the buildings uses a matrix of balconies, arranged
into a formation which "references the local architectural
language and Mexican tradition of interlocking lattice
geometries to provide shading and describe the outdoor space of
each residence."
Function definition and Usage index of various spaces
The project also includes a 30,000 square meter park
with a café, gym and reading room, in addition to an
amphitheater to be used for concerts.
oriented towards the centrally positioned
green space, each residence features a
private balcony whose interlocking forms
reference mexico’s vernacular
architectural language. the scheme
is set to be completed in three phases,
with the first stage set to be finalized by 2018. GYM

ABOUT SITE & LOCATION:-
ITY:- BUSSIGNY-PRÈS-LAUSANNE, SWITZERLAND
LIENT:- 3,000 inhabitants by 2030
LIMATE:-MODERATE WITH NO EXCESSIVE HEAT, COLD OR HUMIDITY
YPE:- GROUP TYPE HOUSING & AVOIDING A MORPHOLOGY OF HOUSING SEGMENT ONLY ON THE VERTICALITY
REA (m.sq.):- 2780 M.SQ.

A mix of simplex and duplex typology while keeping a clearly

distinct identity of housing units.
CONCEPT:-
• Ten volumes of 3 levels are deliberately oriented at 65°
in order to optimize the orientation of the facade to the southwest.

• This volumetric play also makes it possible to create

privatization of each exterior space of the dwellings.
This offset means that the corners of these volumes
are home to independent winter gardens.

• Repetition of units voluntarily marked on the street side

so that the future inhabitants identify their dwellings not 65° ANGLED OPENING
with a housing bar but with small houses of 3 levels joined together.

• The building thus develops linearly and parallel to the

street over a distance of almost 100m.

• A grid structures the project and is reflected in the structure

of the building for the stairwells and is identified by the structural
entablature of the in-situ and prefabricated concrete terraces.
TYPOLOGY

• Within this framework, a multitude of typologies simplex or

duplex is developed according to certain systematics.

• These different apartments can be superimposed, overlapped,

or built into each other. BASEMENT

• This diversity of typology favors the social mix of all

generations that responds to the challenges of our society.

MATERIALITY

• On the North-West side,

the composition of the façade seeks
a certain balance between volume,
repetition, and a regulating layout
of the openings.

• On the southwest side, a first plan

is presented by a structure of pillars
and entablature offset to the rhythm REPETITION OF THE OPENING
of the concrete grid as well as
the filling with clinker brick and
metal railings.

ENVIRONNEMENT.

• The two air-to-water heat pumps avoid fossil fuels and

supply the heating solely with the electrical energy from the
photovoltaic panels.

• A double-flow air mechanical ventilation system will be

installed to promote quality air and reduce micro-pollutants.

• The green roof of the building and the various meadows in

the landscaping will encourage the development of biotopes
DOUBLE-FLOW AIR MECHANICAL VENTILATION SYS
while guaranteeing exemplary thermal comfort for the future
inhabitants.

• In addition, personal vegetable gardens allow the land to be

appropriated by all the apartments and promote social
contacts.

This project, which is both individual and grouped, seeks to

create a social and community myth almost in the form of a
new, contiguous small village of yesteryear. GREEN ROOF
