Field Study 1
Episode 4:
Learner Diversity:
The Community and
Home Environment
Spark Your Interest
Episode 4 provides opportunities for you to have a more in-depth look into the factors that affect the
development of a learner. Focus will be on the early experiences and characteristics of the learner as
described by the family and other significant others. You will also focus how the teacher links with the
community to maximize the learning and development of students.
TARGET Your intended Learning outcomes
At the end of this Episode, I must be able to:
√ describe the influencing factors in the home environment that affect the students'learning;
√ seek advice concerning strategies that build relationships with parents/guardians and the
wider community (6.2.1); and
√ identify effective strategies on how teachers can work together with the family.
REVISIT the Learning Essential
1. Urie Bronfenbrenner's bio-ecological model presents the learner within the context of layers of
relationship systems that make up the learner's environment. The layers are:
Microsystem- Mesosystem- the Exosystem- the Macrosystem- Chronosystem-
includes the connection bigger social Outermost layer the element of
structure such as between the system which which includes time, patterns of
one's structures in the includes the city cultural values, stability and
family, school microsystem government, the customs and laws pacing of the
and workplace and child's everyday
neighborhood the mass media life.
The model helps the teacher look into every aspect in the learner's environment to understand his
[Link] teacher's important role is not to replace what is missing at home (if any),but to work so that
the school becomes an environment that welcomes and nurtures [Link] teacher works to create a
partnership with the family and the community to bring out the best in every learner.
2. Baumrind's Parenting Styles
Authoritarian.
Parents are very firm with their children and expect unwavering and unquestioning obedience. Rules
are set by parents and misbehavior is met with withdrawal of affection, physical punishment or threats
Permissive
are not firm or [Link] have few expectations. May be warm and caring but appear to be
uninvolved and uninterested.
Rejecting-Neglecting
Parents are disengaged from children. Neither demanding nor responsive to children. Provide no
structure, supervision, support or guidance.
Authoritative
Parents achieve a good blend. They are firm yet loving. Have clear and reasonable expectations
and limits for their children. Treat children with respect and warmth. Make children understand
consequence of their behavior.
Children of:
Authoritarian Parents:
are often unhappy, fearful, withdrawn, inhibited, hostile and aggressive. They have low self-esteem
and difficulty with peers.
Permissive Parents:
believe that their parents do not care for them. They are often impulsive, aggressive and lack self-
control; may they have low levels of independence and responsibility.
Rejecting-Neglecting Parents:
are found to be the least competent in their over-all functioning and adjustment.
Authoritative Parents:
are socially competent,self-reliant,and have greater ability to show self-control. They have higher
self-esteem and are better adjusted.

THE LEARNER'S DEVELOPMENT PROFILE
(Outline)
The Learners' Development Profile
Name of the Learner: Elijah Kate S. Rodriguez
School: Mauban North Elementray School 1
Date of Home Visit: September 13, 2021
Date of Birth: June 23,2014 Age: 7
Grade/Year Level: Grade 1 Gender: Female
Family Profile
Number of Siblings: 1
Birth Order: Second
Parent
Mother: Irish S. Rodriguez
Age: 34
Occupation: None Educational Attainment: College Graduate
Father: Junmark M. Rodriguez
Occupation: Factory Worker Educational Attainment: College Graduate
Physical Development
Elijah Kate is a Light-skinned, she is slightly thin but her height is just appropriate to her age. She is
also a good looking girl. A healthy child and don’t have any serious illness.
Social Development
She is sociable enough because she goes out and mingles with her cousins and church mates. She is
also a sweet daughter to her parents.
Emotional-Moral Development
She always wants to communicate with others and someone to talk too. She loves to express
what she wants, feels and share the ideas that she have especially to her mother.
Cognitive Development
She is good and smart. She is exerting effort in academics and strives hard to understand the
subjects and lesson. Aside from that her mother requires her to always finish at least two subject a day and
that makes her love what she is doing.
Findings
I find out that she is healthy, that even if her father isn’t with her she has a mother by her side and
is looking at her as she grow and develop. That she grows a fine young girl with the love, care, and is God
fearing child.
Conclusions
Therefore I conclude, In order to have great aspects whether physically, emotionally, morally, and
cognitive aspects the child must have a good background and have someone that is always by her side to tell
and remind her that she is wrong or tells her “Good job” when she do it right. In that way, she will feel the
full support that the needs from her parents.
Recommendations
There was a time that the mother or the parents will be busy and I strongly recommend that even if it
happens, they must remember that the child must be considered and will not be left behind.
ANALYZE
Your findings and recommendations in the Learner Development Profile will help you answer the
questions here.
1. From your home visit and interview, what do you think is the style of parenting experienced by
the learner? Explain your answer.
When I interviewed the learner, I think the style of parenting experienced by the learner is
authoritative. Her mother is kind of firm but a loving mother to her child. The rules that she have for her
child is firm with love. In which she tries to be strict as well as to make her child feel that she is loved and
what she is doing is for her own good. She even show support to her child in what ever she wants to do, in
school and in other activities that would teach her child to grow and be mature.
2. Relating your data with what you learned from child development, what family factors do you
think contribute to the development and over-all adjustment of the learner in school?
The learner’s development and environment relating with what I learned from child development,
family is one of the main factor’s that will contribute to the development and over-all adjustment of the
learner. If his/her family is supportive enough to the child’s schooling, then the child will be socially
competent, self-reliant, and will have greater ability to show self-control because they know that in times of
problem, he/she knows that his/her family can be a great help to his/her adjustments and development.
3. Does the communication between the home-school have an effect on the learner? If yes, what
are these effects?
Yes, home-school communication is good because it can be a greater help in the schooling of the
child. The child will be guided in his/her behavior both in school and home. If there are problems in school
or home, then the child will be corrected or assisted by their parents or teacher. The effect of this is the child
will be monitored well whether he/she is in the school or home because school-home has a connection and
the actions will be taken by their teachers/parents.
4. How can the teacher partner with the community to contribute to the development and learning
of the students? Who are the people or which institutions can the teacher tap to seek advice
regarding the development and learning of students
The teacher can ask the principal or administrator to approve this specific activity that will promote
and aims to help the development and learning of the students. Like for example: Brigada eskwela, tree
planting, feeding program and etc.
REFLECT
1. Reflect on your own development as a [Link] type of parenting did you experience? How
did it affect you?
I observe that the style of parenting I have is authoritative type of parenting. Where in my
parents are always in authority and rules are given, yet they are so gentle and loving. They
demand and respond to us equally. I am not restricted to all things
2 As a future teacher, how would you establish good home-school collaboration? How can you
work well with the parents? How can you help them? How can they help you?
