I. Background of the Study

“Biyahe ni Drew” is a Local Travel Television Show broadcasted by GMA Network. It showcases

the beauty of the places around the world, both internationally and locally. The host, Drew Arellano travels

to different destinations to promote tourism that even with limited budget everyone can travel both in

Philippines and abroad. The show received was recognized as the “Best Travel Oriented TV Show” at the

1st Philippine Tourism Industry Awards and the host was also recognized as the Best Travel Oriented TV

Show Host. They received a lot of awards and recognitions since the beginning of their show for its

contribution to Philippine Tourism. (Manila Standard, 2017)

Tourism in the Philippines plays an important role in the socio-economic growth to generate

investment, foreign exchange, and employment of the country. The Department of Tourism is the primary

government agency who handles the tourism in the Philippines (tourism.gov.ph, 2018). One of its attached

agencies is the Tourism Promotions Boardwhich is responsible for marketing and promoting the Philippines

domestically and internationally as a major global destination. The agency has a lot of projects, programs,

and activities to promote the Philippines like the trips that they organized for different companies

internationally and domestically. (tpb.gov.ph, 2018)

There are many ways to promote the tourism in the Philippines and one of those is by media.

Watching television has a great impact in promoting different products because many businessmen market

their product by making commercials and use popular artists to promote their product. The television show,
“Biyahe ni Drew,” without knowing, this show helps in promoting the Philippine Tourism because of the

content of their program.The researchers want to conduct a research about the impacts of the television

show, “Biyahe ni Drew,” in promoting the Philippine tourism to the Tourism Management students.

II. Statement of the Problem

This research aims to know The Impacts of the television show “Biyahe ni Drew” in promoting the

Philippine tourism to the Tourism Management Students of Polytechnic University of the Philippines, Sta.

Mesa Manila. Specifically, it attempts to answer the following questions:

1. What are the impacts of “Biyahe ni Drew” in promoting the Philippine Tourism to selected Tourism

Management students of Polytechnic University of the Philippines?

2. How did this show help in promoting Philippine Tourism internationally and domestically?

3. What are the effective ways of promoting the tourist attractions in the Philippines that are seen in

the show?

Review of Related Literature

In today’s time, technology has been a vital role in our daily lives, wherein, we are independent in

using technology. Especially, viewing our favorite television shows in our cabled television or just simply

surfing the internet. According to Andersson (2010) Television and Screens is the viewers’ window to the

world, and through television or Internet the big wide world is brought into the domestic shelter of everyday

life. Viewing Television shows and online streaming have benefits that may improve our knowledge in

what’s happening in our surroundings. Although, television viewing is heavily criticized in a negative way

but its just a choice of a viewer if they will watch educational television programmes or a show that has a

knowledgeable content. In an international context, the genre term in itself is confusing and combines
examples of holiday programmes, leisure programmes, travel shows and travel series. At the same time

the different terms highlight the different historical and cultural characteristics of the genre, as well as

indicating a genre that is in a state of constant development and negotiation, as the case with many factual

television entertainment genres.

Television shows and online streaming shows have different ways portraying their production,

through this, they may acquire the sense of spreading information that involve awareness in our emotional

and mental thinking as human beings. According to Lyoelevisionn-Jones (n.d.) there are 21 subcategories

in television shows and these are travel, cartoon, makeover, drama, soap, documentary and etc. The

categories may vary to impacts that may be positive or negative for the viewers. In fact, a study conducted

by Peiyu Hu (2014) in Southern Utah University that they interviewed 50 students who watches educational

videos and series which are crash courses. Most of the respondents approved that they have been

educated through watching these kinds of television shows which, they say that it is very effective for them

to understand and remember things through the use of visual learning.

The focus on travel shows or series showcases the tourism of a certain place or country. Due to

the presence of technology, travel and tourism have more potential to spread the greatness of one location

in just viewing in a certain screen or media, thus, it still matters to the production team of a travel series if it

is entertaining yet effective to the viewers or not. According to Waade (2010) that there are two theoretical

aspects regarding travel series. One is in relation to theories on actual television entertainment genres and

the other one is in relation to tourism theory. These aspects reflect in to two main communicative issues

that exist in travel series. The first one is how the series address the viewer (media communicative aspect)

and secondly (tourist communicative aspect) how the host or the show itself represent the stage destination

and the route. In this case, travel series offer the viewer a look of other cultures, landscapes, food and

different places within the world and the series may deal with cultural and national differences through just
showing it in a form of audiovisual communication. There is also another type of media that influences the

travelling perspective on an individual and this is the trend in today’s time which is Travel Vlogging. It is an

informative online travel series that provides travel video guides for destinations all over the world with an

emphasis on activities, accommodation, food & nightlife. In a study conducted by Davydova (2012)

Effective Vlogging is showing the preferences and thus expressing their ideal travel experience, Also, the

identities of modern people strives to be disposable and with the use of internet it fulfils this sense of

experiencing the destinations activities in just simply watching the travel vlog.

In The Philippines, Tourism has been a big part in the economy’s growth and with this there have

been inspirations in creating vlogs, Films and television series for the people to be enticed in visiting the

Philippines or just entertainment for the locals. According to Aquines and Batra (2016) Films have now

become one of the influences for an individual to travel film locations. In their study they focused on the

Filipino film “That thing Called Tadhana” recorded in Sagada, Philippines. They found out that a few months

after showing, there was a rapid increase in tourist arrivals in Sagada. On their final findings there is

significance of just promoting a film-induced tourism. Moreover, there is a Bill introduced by Sen. Sonny

Angara that the Philippine Government is engaging to promote the country’s tourism by using film tourism.

The Bill was inspired in New Zealand’s film “Lord of the Rings” as promoting different locations of the said

country. It effectively enticed tourist to visit New Zealand’s featured places in the movie and increased the

tourist arrival by 50% wherein, it is very effective for the economy. According to the Senate Bill No. 1330

The Philippines stands to furthermore increase the number of tourist arrival and with that it may stimulate

the country’s economy.


II. Significance of the Study

This study would give great contribution to the following:

Department of Tourism (DOT) - By being knowledgeable of the study, DOT will be aware of the

places that need improvements and look for the possible solutions for the progress of the places.

Travellers- This study will encourage the travellers to visit and explore the destinations here in the

Philippines because of the information they gained in the show.

Viewers- serve as an engine to encourage the viewers to visit the place and inform them about the

people and the culture to avoid misinterpretation.

Tourism Students- this study will be a great help to the tourism management students to enlighten

them on how to market the place effectively

Biyahe ni Drew Productions – this study will benefit the production in a way that they can take the

insights of the viewers to have a better outcome of promoting other travel destinations.

Future Researchers- the conclusions of this study could serve as a reference to future researchers

that might conduct studies similar too this field.

III. Scope and Limitations

In this study, the researchers will only focus on the impacts of the television show ‘Biyahe ni Drew’

in promoting the Philippine tourism. To gather data; they will have 8 respondents to answer their questions

to come up with accurate conclusions. The respondents will only be the Tourism Management students of

Polytechnic University of the Philippines in Sta. Mesa, Manila.

The researchers will not cover other television shows and the tourism of another country since its

main objective is the Philippine tourism. There will be no more than 8 respondents and less than that
because 8 respondents are enough to conduct an interview to gather data. There will be also no

respondents outside the Polytechnic University of the Philippines in Sta. Mesa, Manila and other college

department students because its main respondents are the Tourism Management students.

IV. Methodology

Data Gathering

In terms of data gathering, the study will use the qualitative research interview method. According

to (Kyale, 1996), the qualitative research interview method intends to explore and describe the meanings of

life’s central themes in the perspective of the interviewees. In addition, this type of data collection method

intends to discuss in the emotions, attitudes, and assumptions of the interviewees. Because of this, the

qualitative research interview method will yield to a more in-depth qualitative exploration of people’s

perceptions about certain topics (The University of Sheffield, 2014).Since the study’s main objective is to

identify the impact of the Television Series “Biyahe ni Drew” in promoting Philippine Tourism, it is fitting that

the aforementioned data collection method was utilized in the study. To be specific, the interview was semi-

structured to ensure that the direction and information retrieved will be from the interviewees’ perspectives

rather than the interviewers’.

Before conducting the interview, the researchers formulated 5 research questions that connects on the

main objective of the research.. The interview approximately lasted for 5 minutes each in interviewing

selected 20 Students of BSTM 1-2N of Polytechnic University of the Philippines. The interviews were

conducted in M.H. Del Pilar Building. In addition, all of the conducted interviews were recorded using a cell

phone application voice recorder for coding purposes.


CODING & DATA ANALYSIS

After conducting the interviews, the researchers transcribed each of the answers. After transcribing the interviews,

the researches utilized several coding methods to deeply understand the interviewees’ Impacts of the local oriented travel

television show “Biyahe ni Drew” in promoting Philippines Tourism. The researchers used descriptive coding. This type of

coding summarizes the main topic of the excerpt. They used in vivo coding. According to (Saldana, 2009), this type of

coding uses the participants’ own exact language or words. Lastly, the researchers used emotion coding. According to

(Anderson, Lofland, Lofland, & Snow, 2006, as cited in Saldaña, 2009), this type is to explore the emotional aspects or

feelings of the interviewees regarding their work, perceptions, and motivations. After coding, the researchers checked the

validity of their coding methods by approaching several people such as students and competent teachers to ask for their

insights. Lastly, the researchers were able to discover the primary themes of the study through analysing and interpreting

their codes.

Once the data is gathered the researchers will identify the effectiveness of viewing ‘Biyahe ni Drew.’ They will find

patterns if their respondents have the same answers and perceptions.
