tenance of overhead electric power distribution equipment along with the associated
hazards. A qualified person is one who is trained and competent in:
• The skills and techniques necessary to distinguish exposed live parts from non-live
parts of electrical equipment.
• The skills and techniques necessary to determine the proper approach distances
corresponding to the voltages to which the qualified person will be exposed.
• The proper use of the special precautionary techniques, personal protective equipment,
insulating and shielding materials, and insulated tools for working on or near exposed
energized parts of electrical equipment.
These instructions are intended only for such qualified persons. They are not intended to
be a substitute for adequate training and experience in safety procedures for this type of
equipment.

Safety Precautions

  DANGER

Disconnect Switches may be energized from either side,

and with the blade in any position. Always consider all cir-
cuits and disconnect live parts energized until de-energized,
tested, and grounded. Contact with energized live parts
can cause serious personal injury or death.

Inspection

Examine the shipment for external evidence of damage as soon after receipt as
possible, preferably before removal from the carrier’s conveyance. Check the bill
of lading to make sure that all shipping skids, crates, and containers listed thereon
are present.
If there is visible loss and/or damage:
1. Notify the delivering carrier immediately.
2. Ask for a carrier inspection.
3. Note condition of shipment on all copies of the delivery receipt.
4. File a claim with the carrier.
If concealed damaged is discovered:
1. Notify the delivering carrier within 15 days of receipt of shipment.
2. Ask for a carrier inspection.
3. File a claim with the carrier.
Also notify S&C Electric Company in all instances of loss and/or damage.

Installing the Loadbuster Disconnect Switch

STEP 1. Remove the disconnect switch from its shipping

carton.
STEP 2. Install blade stop pin in desired location. S&C Stop pin — may be moved

Top Style are furnished with a factory-installed blade opening to 90 degrees
blade stop pin, positioned for a 160-degree blade
opening angle. This stop pin may be moved to limit
the blade opening to 90 degrees. Remove the
retaining ring from one end of the stop pin, and
relocate pin to the alternate ¼-inch diameter hole
nearest the hinge. Fasten the stop pin by pressing
the retaining ring over the end of the stop pin until
the ring snaps back into the groove provided. See
Figure 1.
STEP 3. Attach the Loadbuster Disconnect Switch to a suit
able mounting bracket as illustrated in Figure 2.
Note: A mounting bracket—suitable for crossarm,
pole, or wall mounting—is furn ished only if it has
been specified through the addition of suffix “‑B” to
catalog number of Loadbuster Disconnect Switch.

drive the blade to the closed position using a vigorous thrust. Carefully disengage the
prong from the pull-ring taking care to avoid pulling the blade open.

Opening the
 WARNING
Disconnect Switch
Do not attempt to open an S&C Loadbuster Disconnect Switch to interrupt load current,
without the use of a loadbreak tool such as S&C’s Loadbuster Tool. An arc started by
opening a disconnect switch under load without a loadbreak tool can cause arc-
ing, equipment damage, serious injury, or death.

S&C’s Loadbuster Tool is ideally suited for use in opening Loadbuster Disconnect
Switches. Loadbuster Tool is S&C’s unique method of providing low-cost, positive, and
convenient live-switching capability for such devices. Instructions for use of Loadbuster
Tool with S&C Loadbuster Disconnect Switches are on pages 8 and 9 .

Opening Disconnect Switch with Loadbuster—The S&C Loadbreak Tool

Before opening the disconnect switch, check for proper

resetting of the Loadbuster tool by extending the tool
Attachment
about three inches (77 mm) by hand. Throughout this
hook
travel, an increasing spring resistance should be felt. Anchor

STEP 1. Reach the Loadbuster tool across in front of the

disconnect switch and hook the anchor, located at Pull-ring
Pull-ring hook
the top of Loadbuster tool, over the attachment
hook on the far side of the disconnect switch. See
Figure 3.
STEP 2. Swing Loadbuster tool toward the disconnect
switch and pass the Loadbuster tool pull-ring hook
through the pull-ring on the disconnect switch. The
pull-ring latch will deflect and upon complete entry
of the pull-ring, will spring back, locking Load
buster tool to the pull-ring. Loadbuster tool is now
Pull-ring latch
connected across the upper contacts of the
disconnect switch.
STEP 3. To open the circuit, operate Loadbuster tool with a
firm, steady pull until it is extended to its maximum
length. See Figure 4. Avoid jerking and hesitation.
The resetting latch will keep it open. Generally,
there will be no indication of circuit interruption.
The only sound will be that of Loadbuster tool
tripping.

Opening Disconnect Switch with Loadbuster—The S&C Loadbreak Tool

STEP 4. To detach Loadbuster tool after circuit interrup

tion, first raise it slightly and disengage the anchor
from the attachment hook.
Next, bring the disconnect switch toward its
fully open position as illustrated in Figure 5. Then
remove Loadbuster tool from the pull-ring by rotat
ing the pole. This will deflect the pull-ring latch
to release the pull-ring. To perform this operation
easily and smoothly, always roll Loadbuster tool
so that it rotates in a downward direction.

 WARNING
Careless manipulation of the Loadbuster tool can
decrease the open gap to the point where flashover
will occur. This can result in arcing, electrical shock,
serious injury, or death.

STEP 5. To reset Loadbuster tool for the next operation,

hold as shown in Figure 6. Extend the tool slightly
and lift the resetting latch with your thumb. With
the latch up, telescope the tool completely so the
trigger can reset itself. Depress the telescoping
tube until the orange paint on the inner tube
assembly is no longer visible. Check for proper
resetting by extendi ng the tool about three inches
(77  mm). Throughout this travel an increasing
spring resistance should be felt. Figure 5.  Detaching Loadbuster tool from disconnect switch.
