The song “Ang Mabuting Pilipino” by Noel Cabangon is a contemporary take of the singer to our

patriotic oath “Panatang Makabayan” that we recite after singing our National Hymn during our flag
ceremony in our younger years. While the Pledge of Allegiance enumerates the values Filipinos should
stand for, Noel Cabangon’s song goes further by citing examples of everyday situations where we
Filipinos can uphold values of honesty, integrity, justice, truth, among others.

One can also look at it as a checklist—to remind ourselves not to compromise our values amidst
temptations to do otherwise, and be worthy citizens of this nation. It can also be utilized by Filipinos as a
standard of measure for politicians holding office whether they are living up to the ideals of being a
Filipino. The Filipinos should not only exercise these principles in our thoughts, words and actions but
also remain vigilant in ensuring that the people we put into office are doing the same.

The song seeks to remind Filipinos that loving one’s country should not be confined to great acts
of heroism. Being an upright citizen can be done everyday, and the song encourages Filipinos to practice
them consistently. By simply obeying traffic rules, respecting our parents, taking our studies seriously,
keeping our environment clean, upholding our dignity, we become a more disciplined and stronger
nation.

I highly recommend this catchy tune to all Filipinos because of its nationalistic verve that our
country badly need at these trying times. We see in the news how neighboring countries are beginning
to encroach in our shores, compromising our safety, and more importantly our sovereignty. This song
can be used as a rally cry for Filipinos to stand together as one nation. By knowing who we are, and what
we stand for, we can defend our freedom from those seeking to undermine it.
