MODULE 3 DOCUMENTED ESSAY ON A CONCEPT

POST TEST

LESSON 1: Academic Research and the Documented Essay in the Twenty-First

Century

1. After-Reading Questions: What is plagiarism? by Teresita Gimenez-Maceda

1. List the three main types of plagiarism described by the author.

● First is when a person copies word-for-word a sentence, a paragraph, a whole article, a
section of a book, or different sections of a long article or book written by another
author and does not enclose the copied words in quotation marks. The second kind of
plagiarism is when a person borrows someone else ideas, rewords them to make the
ideas seem like her/his own. This becomes apparent when there is no attribution to the
original author. The third kind of plagiarism is when a person translates to Filipino or
other Philippine languages someone else ideas that were expressed in English or other
foreign languages and fails to enclose the translated material in quotation marks.

2. Are there any other types or examples of plagiarism that you can give?
● NONE

3. Write any questions you have about what might constitute plagiarism (e.g., quoting song
lyrics or poetry on social media or a blog post, fan fiction* reusing a paper you wrote for
another class, re-posting images on the Internet). Ask your teacher about these cases.

4. Why is plagiarism often easily spotted by fellow academics? What are its telltale signs?
● One reason is that fellow academics are quite well read and often very familiar with
their fields, and that would include the literature in these areas. In regards to students,
when a student normally writes at one level and their work suddenly appears to be of
the quality to appear in academic journals, it normally causes the professor to take a
stronger look at the paper. Some telltale signs is, it is too dramatically and the tone they
used is not steady. The vocabulary is way too high at their age. The cited work are not
complete and concrete. No proper uses of sites and sources.
MYCAH L. BOLUSAN
BSA 1A

5. According to the author, why do students plagiarize? Can you think of any other reasons for
student plagiarism or for plagiarism outside the academe?
● For undergraduate students, she believe that their plagiarism is borne more out of
desperation than malicious intent. I think some students will deliberately plagiarize
when they feel themselves backed into a corner in a high-pressure situation with a low
risk of being caught. Often, this behavior is a result of poor time management and
organization skills.

6. What are the sanctions for plagiarism mentioned in the essay? Do you believe these are
fitting and adequate punishments for the crime? Why or why not?
● The author mentioned in the essay that when a plagiarist is finally found out in her/his
professional life, s/he can lose a job. But worse, a plagiarist who eventually becomes
corrupt will have lost her/his soul.
● Yes plagiarism is a crime, it is also an ethics violation if you are in a teaching or student
position. Normally, plagiarism is punished as a civil law violation and is therefore not
subject to imprisonment, but depending upon from whom or where you steal the
material it may be subject to prosecution as a felony. Absolutely plagiarism is a crime
no matter what discipline a student follows. Learning to become a critical thinker does
require a student to have an ability to see more than one perspective and think through
an issue based on a set of givens.

7. Why do you think does the author emphasize the term “katapatan” in connection with
academic writing?
● The term “katapatan”, like what its English translation provided by the author
connotes, perfectly encapsulates what academic writing should be: honest, truthful,
and of integrity.

2. After Reading Questions: Hashtag Awareness: The #BracketAKaNa Trend and

Its Implications on the Socialized Tuition System
Dianna Limpin

I. What trend does this essay report on? What important background information does the
essay provide about the trend?
● Students from the University of the Philippines expressed on social media their dismay
over the results of the school's Socialized Tuition System (STS) released late Monday.
#BracketAKaNa trended on Twitter Monday night after most of the students were
designated into bracket A — referred to as the 'millionaire's bracket' — and will pay
P1,500 per unit. The estimated tuition in this bracket is P30,000 — relatively high
considering that UP is a public school. Most of the tweets mock what students think is
an unfair STS process. But despite the humor, many people see this as a legitimate
protest against the STS. The Socialized Tuition System is a tuition scheme in UP
wherein the amount that a student will pay will be determined using various factors
such as paying capacity of applicants and other socio-economic characteristics of their
household. Last year, the UP administration vowed to reform the socialized tuition
system after the death of UP Manila freshman Kristel Tejada. She committed suicide
allegedly due to her family's failure to pay for her tuition.

2. What is the point or central idea of the essay? What does the essay say about the larger
implications of the trend?
● #BracketAKaNa is the common expression of the University of the Philippines
System’s students expressing their disappointment, fury, and shock on the common
result of their STS application which is landing at the highest bracket – the
millionaire’s bracket – Bracket A. Prior the implementation of STS she was assigned to
Bracket C under the previous tuition system Socialized Tuition and Financial
Assistance Program (STFAP) to which she paid P600 per unit just almost a thousand
less than what she paid this semester. Bewildered with her current bracket assignment
she then sought for a bracket reassignment to where she believes is judicious and what
her parents can at the very least struggle to afford.

3. List at least three supporting ideas or points for this central idea or argument.
4. Documentation: How many different kinds of sources did the student use? How was each
type of source used – as an example/illustration or as an authoritative voice?

Lesson 2: Critical Thinking, Collaboration, and the Writing Process

Activity 2: Pre-Writing, Writing, and Rewriting a Documented Paragraph

Instructions: Go through the various steps of the writing process by planning, drafting, and
then revising a documented paragraph of five to ten sentences on a topic limited from the
general ones listed here. This paragraph must make an argument about the specific limited
topic and support it with at least three main points backed up by evidence from sources. At
least three sources must be cited to give support to the points in the paragraph. After drafting
the paragraph, ask at least two classmates to read the paragraph and give you feedback. Then,
review and edit the paragraph to come up with a final draft.

General topics : International beauty pageants, trends in how Filipinos name their children,
Philippine superheroes, piracy, historical revisionism, blogging, “Twitterature.”

General topic chosen: International beauty pageants

Specific topic: Beauty Pageants

Research questions: Do beauty pageants help to build self-confidence among womens?

Main research question: Do beauty pageants serve a purpose in society?

Central Idea/Thesis statement: Beauty contests teach young teenage girls to feel bad about
themselves and only bring people insecurity and teach people that the world cares only about
looks.

three (or more) supporting points:

1. The only purpose they serve is to destroy young girls self-esteem
2. It doesn’t make sense that a woman’s beauty is judged in order to put her in a position to
use her brains to do good in her community
3. Beauty pageants are a little sexist and objectifying

First draft of the paragraph:

Womens who compete in beauty pageants may experience low self-esteem and depression as
adults, so beauty pageants have negative effects because they maintain women should be tall,
thin, and conventionally beautiful in order to have successful lives. However, is it possible for
womens to feel empowered? The negative aftereffects include depression and low self-esteem.
In addition, young girls who participate in pageants only learn that beauty equals success.
While some may believe beauty pageants are harmless, they should have rules, such as
France’s new law, that regulates the content of young children’s beauty pageants.

Second/Final draft of the paragraph:

Womens who compete in beauty pageants may experience low self-esteem and depression as
adults, so beauty pageants have negative effects because they maintain women should be tall,
thin, and conventionally beautiful in order to have successful lives. However, is it possible for
womens to feel empowered? The negative aftereffects include depression and low self-esteem.

Lesson 3: Concepts of Social and Cultural Significance In the Philippines

After-Reading Questions: For the Filipino Woman That You Are

Karla Bianca M. Labog

1. Describe some of the more traditional gender roles in the Philippines? How are women and
men supposed to behave in the context of courtship, household duties, work and earning
money, child-rearing, and any other areas you can think of?
● For example, girls and women are generally expected to dress in typically feminine
ways and be polite, accommodating, and nurturing. Men are generally expected to be
strong, aggressive, and bold. Every society, ethnic group, and culture has gender role
expectations, but they can be very different from group to group. Gender socialization
begins at birth and occurs through four major agents of socialization: family,
education, peer groups, and mass media. Repeated socialization over time leads men
and women into a false sense that they are acting naturally, rather than following a
socially constructed role
MYCAH L. BOLUSAN
BSA 1A

2. Paragraph 9 discusses the equivalent for males, “kalalake mong tao.” How is this different
from the female equivalent, which is the central topic of the essay? What does this imply
about gender roles and stereotypes in the Philippines?
● It’s not just women who experience this. Men are held to standards that the patriarchy
has set for them and a lot of it is really toxic. Men should be providers, men should be
brave, men should be strong, etc and when men fail it’s waved in their faces. Gender
norms are a thing of the past. Men could be house-husbands, men could be artistic and
sensitive, men could be whatever the hell they want. In Filipino culture, while women
are viewed as playing a central, valued role in the family (Aguilar, 1989; Estrada-
Claudio, 1990), there are still stereotyped, sexist expectations of their weakness and
therefore dependence on men.

3. Do you believe that Maria Clara is still viewed as the ideal Filipino woman? Are there any
new ideals and values for women today?
● It’s true Maria Clara is also seen as a role model for Filipinas who are surviving after
the abuse and violence they experienced from men. Remember: It was also implied she
was raped by Padre Salvi, a Spanish priest, while she was in the convent. But it is
archaic to keep insisting that Maria Clara is the embodiment of purity and femininity,
when she and every Filipina are more than that.

LESSON 2: Intercultural issues in Workplace Communication

Synthesis Activities
1. Why is it important to be culturally sensitive in the workplace?
● Cultural sensitivity in the workplace is important because it enables employees to
improve productivity, reduce communication barriers and engage fully in the
workplace environment. When a workplace focuses on helping employees to be more
culturally sensitive, it teaches the workforce how to learn about people who are
different from themselves. This understanding allows employees to serve each other
and their customers better.

2. Why do we need effective communication skills for the professions?

● Having strong communication skills aids in all aspects of life – from professional life to
personal life and everything that falls in between. From a business standpoint, all
transactions result from communication. Good communication skills are essential to
allow others and yourself to understand information more accurately and quickly.

3. Consider the following and then counter the four claims made: Some people think that they
do not need to learn to write well to succeed professionally. They figure that (a) once they
become managers, there will be other people to do their writing for them, like secretaries or
assistants, (b) that there are jobs that do not require writing at all, (c) that they can use form
letters and templates, or (d) that they can avoid writing altogether by just calling up or
meeting with people they need to communicate with.
a.) Furthermore, ever developing technology has a huge impact on how we work and
communicate with each other. The Management Assistant report sheds light on how
Assistants, human resource experts and other managers view the future and how they see the
Management Assistant’s role evolve.
b.) Although many jobs in today's market require some writing, there are a host of other jobs
that do not. If you don't like writing in any capacity, there may still be a job for you.
c.) you can modify any letter template to perfectly match your needs. Feel free to change the
fonts and colors, add a text box for terms and conditions, write a personalized message, and
stamp your logo for a more personal touch. Your custom letter template will instantly convert
every form response into easily-accessible PDFs. If you’d like to send your clients
confirmation letters or copies of their submissions, simply set up an autoresponder and
enable PDF attachments.
MYCAH L. BOLUSAN
BSA 1A

d.) Communication, the exchange of information or ideas between sender and receiver, can be
challenging in one’s personal life, at school, and especially in business. Today, it’s even more
complex because business is conducted on a global basis 24/7, often using different languages
and different communication methods. In this constant, high-speed business environment,
communication blunders can cost more than you might think.

Lesson 3: Simulating the Philippine Workplace

3. The documents on the following pages are two error-filled documents: a cover letter (Text
A) and a resume (Text B). Identify the errors and then revise them by correcting the errors in
format and mechanics, grammar and spelling, organization, layout, and design. Also, make
sure to spell out acronyms, and explain Greek-letter honor societies, unusual job titles, or
organizations that may be unfamiliar to the reader.
